Sequel to Suicide Club?

I loved suicide club, and have been waiting for Noriko's Dinner Table to be released in the states ever since i first saw it. But now that i can finally get my hands on it, I have a concern.

Is this a sequel to Suicide Club? Or a continuation? I know it deals with a different plot and characters and all that, but how is it related to Suicide Club? Or is it just a totally different movie and universe and story and all?

Explain without any spoilers please!

What trentsketch said.

"Suicide Club" showed a number of people somehow affected by the...cult, fad, whatever it was. "Noriko's Dinner Table" shows how one family gets involved in the whole thing and what it does to them. I dunno, it's really hard to explain. It's like, "Noriko's Dinner Table" helps you understand the philosophy behind why everyone in "Suicide Club" were able to kill themselves so easily.

The heart has its reasons, which reason knows nothing of.

Yes, the movie isn't a sequel in any way, but rather a more intimate rendering of the philosophy of the first. I was worried that too much would be explained, reducing the existential beauty of Suicide Club to the mundane so delayed for a long time on watching it, but these concerns were unnecessary. In fact, it serves to deepen the mystery rather than shine lights into the dark places.

Existential beauty of 54+ people throwing their lives away? Wow you really are sick.

Netrek - what was said was not "Existential beauty of 54+ people throwing their lives away"

"Gran'pa was always tha best...."

He/she said that it was existential beauty and yes these 54+ people did needlessly throw their lives away. To suggest such a thing has any sort of beauty is disgusting and offensive.
