The argument

First of all, awesome movie!

I've been inspired to look for more Japanese films after seeing this.

Question: Was it ever revealed why Kei and Rinko had the fallout at the start?

reply

I agree, this was an (unexpected) awesome movie!
And when I finished watching it, I asked myself the same question.
I thought they were going to shed some light on the argument in
the end, but they didn't. Does anyone know the answer to this
question?

reply

The answer was, "That's just the way they are."

In other words, it didn't matter what the cause was. The two of them were going to fight anyway.

actually they sort of did at the end before they played. the translation's not bad (thanks for translations!) but it's hard to gauge the tone of what's being said, as well as the context of the dialogues unless you know some japanese yourself. rinko's tone at the end wasn't passive aggressive and by the way kei and rinko were talking to one another it seemed to me that they sort of came to somewhat of an understanding with one another.

I thought the Kei/Rinko argument was pure genius. It forms such a big part of the movie, yet we never know what it was about. I agree that it did get resolved somewhat in the end, but even that was very cryptic. I think Rinko says something like, "You know it was your fault." And Kei answers, "I know."

I guess that's as close to a kiss-and-makeup scene as we'll get, but that's the beauty of the film. There's no big melodramatic reunion with fireworks. It's like real life: simple, unpretentious & a little awkward. This is the style of the movie throughout. A great film!
