Meaning of the title?

Again, like in some other Japanese movies, I absolutely don't get the meaning of its title. Anybody has a clue? What did I miss?

My only thought on the meaning is that the most popular caged bird is the Canary. The children were being 'caged' in the terrorist-cell camp.

Could be a reference to the gas attacks. They use canaries to determine if the air is poisoned in closed spaces.

I realize that this reply is 9 years in coming, but I did think it would be useful in case any other interested person comes to the thread. I am currently reading 'Underground' by Haruki Murakami, about the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack. Nearing the end of the book I came across this bit of information, it is referring to an ex-Aum member,

"Now he's a member of the Canary Association, a group formed
by people who have left Aum, and he's critical of both Aum
and Shoko Asahara."

I am not entirely sure whether that is what the title is referring to, but it seems to fit the journey that the boy undergoes throughout the course of the film, from a devout member of a religious cult, to one who has left it and starts thinking for himself.

I also like the interpretations offered in this thread, about a caged bird or the use of canaries for detecting gas in mines, it all adds up to a somewhat cryptic, but also highly
fitting title. It is a great film.
