18 only version

I was thoroughly disapointed when I bought the Tartan release and found out they released the theatrical version of the film. In Korea, an unsubtitled "18+ Version" DVD was released with a completely different ending, more gore, and more explanations as to the plotholes.

Could somebody tell me the differences between the two versions?

Hi!
I Just looked trough the 18+ Korean disc on Red Shoes.Nearly all gore scenes are longer and more violent..and I mean not just a few seconds.Same goes for the lovemaking scenes they are also longer and shows more. The 18+ version does not include any subtitle. The Korean 2 disc set includes both 15 years(with subtitle)&18 years versions.Nice packing as most Korean discs.I think its a very good film and highly recommended.

reply

Thanks. Ive been reading everywhere about a different ending, and that it reveals what happens to the daughter. Do you think you could tell me what happens please?

reply

I'm a little confused, I just rented the film, haven't watched it yet. But it says its not rated,(i'm in the u.s), is this the 18+ version possibly?

reply

I can't answer for you which one you have, but the American ratings system is independent of what a film gets in another country. If it says it's unrated, that only means it wasn't reviewed by the American ratings people.

reply

The US version is the theatrical Korean version.

The 18 only version has never been released outside of Korea, nor has it been dubbed or subbed in any other language but Korean.

The US release is 103 minutes; the Korean version is 108 minutes.
However, these five minutes completely change the entire film.

Here is an accurate account of the differences:

Damn, the link to the rtf file isn't working for me... is the file gone? :(

reply

Managed to get hold of the 2 disc Korean release :D. Looking forward to getting it!

reply

somebody has the file from twitchfilm?

reply

Wow, I just saw this movie recently and loved it. Now I'm hearing there is a longer version not released in America? Damn you guys!

reply

The scenes that were cut from the western dvd releases are included as extras on a second disc of a korean release of film which I managed to find on ebay. If you're unsure, it is 2-disc and comes in a black slipcase/sleeve.

reply

Yeah, the file for the thing on twitchfilm didn't work for me either! Did anyone save it? Or rather, does anyone remember/watched the differences?

Just saw the alternate version. I don't know korean so I'm not exactly sure what happens in the end:

Spoilers! Spoilers!:

The killing of the large woman through the window glass. One of her feet is severed by the fallen glass. The killer grabs the other leg and scrapes on a shard of glass and saws it off. It's really gross.

The end on the subway platform, the daughter backs away from the mother toward the coming train. This time the daughter does not get away and is struck by the train, her body is broken apart and sent into the dark tunnel. (why doesn't the train stop) The mother is distraught but hears her daughter from the tunnel and walks in. She sees the body but gleefully grabs the shoes. As she clutches them, we see a flashback of the boyfriend getting stabbed in the neck and blood violently gushes on the wall behind him. The mother grabs a nailgun and nails him to a wall of his artwork. Back to the mother laughing manically but also the shoes now have severed feet in them.

Fade out to the mother in her apartment and theres a party going on. Something is said but I don't know what. Dissolve to the mother alone, staring out the window at the billboard advertising with the image of the original girl. Close on the mothers face as her eyes water and a tear rolls down her cheek.

I'm defintely taken aback by this version. It's more mean spirited but still effective.

I tried yours earlier today and it must have just been temporarily down. I tried it two or three times, got a message saying it could not be found, but it is also showing up just fine for me now. Thanks!

Glad I could help.

**Spoilers**

In the original theatrical release, Sun-jae (the mom) dies at the end and the girl lives. In the DVD version it's the opposite.

In the DVD version, the daughter Taesoo falls while running from her mom and is hit by the subway. Oddly, it cuts off her legs with the shoes on. Her mom goes in the tunnel (she hears her daughter's voice) and finds her--first she sees a ghost (hallucination?) of her daughter clutching the shoes, but then she finds Taesoo's cut off legs and starts laughing hysterically. She then slowly walks down the tunnel.

She's then seen in her private practice as an eye doctor. She sees a billboard of Oki with her red shoes and starts crying.
