Different endings.

On the dvd there is two other endings. I liked the one were he excapes at the end as to the one he left in the film. Anyone else agree?

I actually liked him dying the best. That would have been the best ending and making a final powerful statement about his relationship with the baby.

Yes, I liked the one where he dies too. It's so shocking - when he's pulling out the milk bottle to feed the baby and he gets shot. It was the only ending that caused me to shed a tear.

Ahh I've only seen the one on the theatrical release, but I cried in that...I think I would have been happiest if he had escaped. I cried when he gave up the baby, so I think if he died, I'd probably still be bawling right now (I just got done about five minutes ago).

ohh, wow, sucks that iv only seen the theatrical ending....i think the one in which he dies really fits best, even after redemption your past comes to haunt you, specially after you have been such a violent person who have harmed other people....just wondering how does he die? well, i just read that he gets shot, but like when and where was it? was it in the hood where he lived? or outside the kids house?

reply

It was outside the kids house. The cops have him surrounded and he gives the baby back. But he forgets he has the babys bottle, and he reaches into his jacket to get it and the cops think he is getting a gun and shoot him dead.

as much as i would like tsotsi ended up dying and showed the vulnerability and the humane side of him.. i'd prefer him running off injured, but gets away with everything and goes back to miriam. end of story!

I think Mr. Hood chose the right ending for his movie. I really didn't like the alternate ending where Tstosi dies... That ending would be so predictable and sentimental in my opinion

The ending that was used is OK, but I was not left wondering what would happen to Tsotsi. I just figured he would go to jail, and maybe sentenced to death? Don't know anything about the system in South Africa. But, if he'd escaped I would wonder if he was ever captured, did someone turn him in, did he end up with the girl and start his own family, etc.?

If you listens to Gavin Hood's commentary track on the DVD you will heard when he says that in South Africa the Death Penalty was abolished years ago. So Tsotsi culdn't be sentenced to death.

The number of countries that still applies the death penalty have been decreasing in the last 50 years. Currently just 2 of the so called "1st world countries" applies it: USA and Japan. Even in the "Thirld world" most countries doesn't applies it.
Just a few "bastions of democracy and human rights" practices the death penalty routinely, such as: Iran, North Korea, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, (obviously Iraq and Afghanistan) etc. As you can see USA and Japan are in a very good company!
