Great intreospective, powerful movie...he wanted to be the baby

I was deeply impressed by this very interesting, very introspective movie that I think without ever hammering it on really explored the nature vs nurture question, one that I find so fascinating.

My interpretation of the film is that Tsotsi, while stealing the baby and keeping it for himself, actually wanted to be the baby. He wanted to have been a part of that family, to have been raised with opportunities. To have had the chance to be someone else. He saw his hopes and dreams in that baby, a potential life he never had. That is why it was so hard for him to give him up, because he was facing up to reality, and leaving behind the illusion that his life could be something different.

It's a powerful question. Of course, Tsotsi is still responsible for his actions in life. But how much of a chance did he really have? Or do any of us have? Is it fair to blame him for all that he has done? Isn't society/abandonment more to blame? It's an impossible to answer question, but the film presented in a very moving way.

8/10
