I know this sounds dumb, but they looked incredibly real, how do they do it ??

It looks like for the most part the film used trained lions with some CGI lions sprinkled in for a few scenes.
"Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."
I'd say real lions, and special effects for some of the shots. The credits mention a team of lion tamers, so that leads us to believe there would have been real ones on set for some of the filming duration.

No CGI. Its easy to make a lion look fierce when they are just playing. Its all in the soundtrack For instance you can put the lions favorite toy inside the truck and while he is trying to get in, add ferocious growls.
