The Host vs Godzilla 98

Host 7/10
Godzilla 5/10

Why?

I enjoyed Godzilla more but I get why The Host is rated higher. I guess it's a better movie but to me, Godzilla was just more fun in a dumb blockbuster kind of way. Now mind you, I'm a true Godzilla fan and for this post I'll ignore the fact that Godzilla 98 just shat all over the franchise.

The Host was cool but about 30 minutes too long. In parts it reeeeaaally dragged and some scenes, especially the ones where the film decided to be a comedy all of the sudden, just made no sense at all and were just stupid.

Godzilla was stupid all the way through and I appreciate that. The Host felt like it didn't really know whether it's a monster movie, family drama, virus movie or comedy and in the end it just felt unfocused and weird. Maybe it's the cultural difference, I don't know, but given the fact that I watch lots of Asian movies I think I'm used to the weirdness, and in The Host it's the wrong kind of weirdness.

Godzilla(like most monster/Apocalyptic movies): 70% moster related stuff which is cool to watch but forgettable in the long run.
30% human story (basically as an obligation/excuse)

Host: 70% human story and themes as a result of the monster and 30% monster action.
Basically its a tense drama with a critical element of a mutant thats the cause of this tension.

Human stories are more memorable than cool looking action. Thus the rating.

Forget it,Jake. It's Chinatown
