Watch the basketballs, ok honey?

What did his mom mean in that moment telling to Dean "watch the basketballs ok honey?" at the family dinner. Then he responds "Hey mom...." She doesn't pay attention and he goes away...

It baffles me what does it mean, what does it revolve around that last awkward moment?

I believe Dan said or inferred that he hurt his lip when a basketball hit him in the mouth. I would have to go back and watch it again to be sure.

"Almost me, almost you, almost blue."

He has a bust lip and the mother believes his story about being hit in the face with a basketball so she tells him to be careful.

When she does that, she reminds him that he is cared for by someone and in that moment he wants to open up and reveal his struggles to her but she doesn't hear him when he says "Hey mom", and that's because whilst she does love him, he is her son, she doesn't care to know about his troubles or believe she can give him any resolution so she subconsciously ignores him when he says "Hey mom".

i disagree. she doesn't hear him because she's drunk. the whole point of that scene is to show how dan comes from an addictive family.

That’s essentially what Tyler said, minus the insight.
