I asked basically the same question and someone responded that he was probably forgetting to give his cat water. This really made sense to me as i now remember their was never a water bowl next to the cat's food. So it's very likely the cat died of thirst. What do you think of this idea?

I would say it was most likely assocated with a lack of food/water, or perhaps the cat got into some of his coke/crack stash.

Hmm. To be honest, I've always assumed the cat just died. Dan, for all his faults, didn't strike me as the kind of guy who would forget to feed his cat for days at a time.

I think so because when the camera pans through his apartment towards the end of the film, it shows the cat's bowl full with food. It's like he felt guilty or something.
