This was a very bad movie.

Sometimes I feel bad saying that a movie was terrible, because I'm sure that a lot of work probably went into making it. That being said, however, I could not find one redeeming quality about this movie. Everything was weak: concept, story, acting, direction... you name it.

"There is no escape from the nightmare in this dark psychological thriller."

There was nothing thrilling about Experiment, and it was quite literally dark - I think that perhaps they forgot to hire a lighting crew.

I won free passes to the Fantasy International Film Festival in Toronto and this was the one film that I was able to attend. Thankfully, no money was wasted!

Not atall!,-Perhaps you should read the excellent reviews for this award winning film and keep your destructive comments to yourself!

reply

In the interest of truth in criticism: 1-"excellent reveiws"? how about "excellent review" as in singular. 2-"destructive comments"? How about calling a bad movie truthfully, so some poor unsuspecting soul out there doesn't go out and waste 10 bucks and 95 minutes of life on this nonsense?

reply

Four movie pass to the Phoenix Film Festival, missed a screening of the film I wanted to see Friday night, checked this one out instead.

Made a mistake by not walking out with the good majority of the audience halfway through.

It gave me hope that I could also make award-winning movies, though. Hell, I could make an award-winning movie in two days. With a better score.

reply

Have you then made a movie? If so what is it called?

reply

Clever on ya, waiting two days for that response... if intentional.

I'll tell you when. You're on the waiting list.

Hi Andertonian
Must admit I'm new to all this,-don't really understand what you wrote,-I think if you new of the heartbreak and sacrifice that went into making that film you would withdraw your review,- Best JR

Or you could get the rest of the film crew to submit better ratings, your choice.

I'm entitled to my opinion, and in my opinion, it was a waste of 90 minutes.

I disagree immensely. I enjoyed this film very, very, much. I saw this film several months ago at Shriekfest in Hollywood, and I must say it is one of the best films if not the best I saw at the festival, and a film I will remember forever. Most films don't stay with you that long. But this one has and will.

Anyone who claims this movie is bad is a *beep* idiot! Just because the film was dark in tone doesnt mean its a bad movie. This film draws you into a world where no one is safe and everyones motives are hidden within the depths of skillful writing and brilliant execution.

I enjoyed the film and felt as though it was within the same genre type of Seven. On occasion there comes a film that doesnt shy away from the dark side of the human mind and Experiment is certainly on that list.

If you want a fluffy friendly movie then piss off down the blockbuster and rent disney movies.

This film took the chance and succeeded!

This was the worst film I have seen in years. I love Sci-fi thrillers, especially dark paranoid ones but this was totally unoriginal with hardly any dialogue, atrocious acting and crap cinematography. The "conspiracy" was the same as the Bourne Identity except it lacked the suspense of that one. In fact it attempted to borrow much from that movie and failed. The only conspiracy to this film is the nepotism bejind the awards and postive reviews. If you guys had put half the effort into the movie as you have done pushing this flop, you might have made something worth 90 minutes of veiwing.

I don't think the people involved in the making of this film know to much about sci-fi. "Dark" by which you mean Dystopian Sci-fi?

Scanner Darkly, 1984, Brazil, Code 46, The Parallex View or Soylent Green.

Not this. And no amount of whining about how much went into making this film will change the fact that it is *beep*

This film was not awful, but it was below a 5 of 10 rating. I felt the acting actually was not that bad, though some of the actors' performances were underwhelming. And for a low budget, I thought the production values were pretty good.

My problem was with story, direction, and editing. Many low-budget movies take too long on certain shots and not enough story for other bits of plot, and this is no exception. It's like in a novel, the challenge for the author is to convey the necessary action and feeling in the right amount of words - too few and there's not enough sense, too many and you bore your audience. The camera effects and freak-out scenes which were used to express the fear and alienation that Anna was feeling went from startling and creepy to redundant relatively early.

Story-wise, there wasn't enough going. There's less suspense to reveal early on that the protagonists are being watched and guided, and too much backstory is revealed through asides and dialogue rather than shown. So to fill in the void, a lot of footage is spent on city exploration, at least in the first third of the movie. And the ending seemed to be an arbitrary pull-the-rug-out-from-under-you downer rather than anything that satisfies the audience (by satisfaction, I mean making the pieces fit together rather than bewildering, or give rise to a sort of debate; not talking about happy endings). Overall, the direction of Experiment seemed to value mood over tension; so for me, I was left with detached curiosity rather than any emotional involvement.

The acting is laughable and the music pathetic. The end makes no sense whatsoever to me (the involvement of the minister.....I'd love to hear a reasonable, coherent explanation for what the experiment really tried to achieve...was it just toi prove feelings are memory-bound??? Seemed far to silly with the far-fetched unrelistic baddies if that was all).

Kid killin dad was cool though, and given how bad the first hour was I was convinvced it was gonna end in typical Hollywood/Seagal manner, so I was at least surprised there.

Excellent post, I wish you were involved there. Why do people in the movie making biz have very little sense at all?

The minister? Too clever by half. Tossed in as an afterthought?

I actually thought it was pretty good. Good atmosphere, good acting, good suspense. As good or better than a lot of similar films. I was surprised to see that it's a mostly unknown film. I'd give it a solid 7/10.
