Doug and Mike

Would it have killed Doug to accept one of the innumerable objects Mike kept offering him? Would you like a book Doug? No. A hacksaw? No. Linens? No. And on and on.

Doug wondered ad nauseam why he didn't get along with his dad; why they had nothing to talk about; why he felt so uncomfortable with him. But, yet, every time, his dear old dad (83 years old) offered something to Doug, not once was Doug gracious and simply accepted the gift. It was so passive-aggressive of Doug; negating everything his father offered to him.

I agree, I found he explained not needing tools earlier and pointed out that this was one of the ways they were different. However, I didn't understand the purpose of that last scene where he was rejecting everything he offered...?

Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.
