Holly's book and Girls Next Door show tidbits

In Holly's new book, she shared some interesting tidbits about the Girls Next Door show -

1. Holly says the show saved her life/sanity in many ways with having something to do with her days. Hef never let them work outside of the mansion. Thinking up plots made her feel useful and it eventually helped her get the internship at Playboy

2. The Shannon twins were painted in a surprisingly kinder light than expected. They seemed to be concerned about how Hef was being treated, etc. It also shed light on Hef's health.

3. And Crystal did not come across at all nice and she did come across as way too contrived when she was on the series.

4. Hef did not pay the girls for their first season work on GND and it was interesting about how things were filmed out of sequence just for the sake of the brand, etc. Hef even tried to use the success of the show as a reason to make Holly stay.

Yes, the book was certainly interesting. Thanks for sharing those with everyone else. I would recommend anyone who was a fan of this show to read this book. I started re-watching the series after and I'm liking watching it with Holly's perspective.

Also, I just saw this in the FAQS now (I don't think I ever came to this board while the show was airing) that Hef does not own the mansion, Playboy Enterprises does. Holly said in the book (and this is just from my short term memory so I could be off) that he pays 25,000 a month to rent the master bedroom and anywhere from 5,000-7,000 to rent the girlfriends bedrooms. I had no idea 😳

I'm only a few chapters into the book, but already I can never watch the show the same way again! Watching the tender scenes between Holly and Hef is just weird now, knowing how horrible he was to her.

I agree with you. Hef was quite the actor acting like a good guy. I always thought he was nice but after reading Holly's book, i see him in a whole new way...

Disgusting isn't it??!! I enjoyed watching the show back then, I was 32 (only a few years older than Bridget). If you watch their expressions you can see some of the details of the books on their faces. Kendra always looked like she was going to vomit when she "kissed" Hef. And Holly seemed to be in a weird nightmare. Having to pretend to be in love with the nasty old man.

In all honesty, Hef is nothing but a mysogynistic jerk!! He used women to build his empire and then acted like he liberated them and women were stupid enough to fall for it. Young and dumb, no truer words....
I heard someone say, "Carlos Estevez looks JUST like Charlie Sheen!" Good grief...

These women (and all the ones before and after) knew what the deal was. They are paid live-in escorts. I'd say prostitutes, but apart from sex night twice a week they also have duties like being arm candy, being affectionate 'faux' girlfriends, not sleep with anyone else or even fraternize with the staff, abide by a curfew, to not rock the boat with the other escorts and to spend many boring nights playing monopoly and other board games with Hef. In return for their services, they got $1000/wk, clothing/hairdresser/beautician accounts, cosmetic surgery, the use of a decent car, free board and food (even the women that had children were accounted for by being able to live elsewhere on the mansion grounds with their child), meeting celebrities and work and fame opportunities. The fame opportunity was the biggest draw card- being photographed at nightclubs and on the red carpet, but mainly to appear in the magazine to kick start their (nude) modelling careers. In fact, way too many "girlfriends" bailed as soon as they appeared in the magazine, that Hef axed that part of the deal. Also if an escort left the mansion on good terms, Hef would continue to throw them some work if they came grovelling (and hadn't disclosed anything about mansion life).

Being girlfriend number 1 was not a coveted position. Very few of the women wanted that position as they lost all independence and privacy by having to live in Hef's room (another poster mentioned that he paid for their individual rooms which is correct, and the rooms varied in price depending on if they were private or shared, or had a bathroom, size etc. So Hef saved money having one live in his room with him). And as Kendra eloquently pointed out recently, they have 'clean up' duties. The head girlfriend is responsible for organising sex nights, having towels ready, making sure the rest of the women bathed first, cleaning Hef off between women, wielding the super size bottle of baby oil, making sure the women 'acted' the part when not having their 2 minutes on him, and finishing him off. From what i've read, there was very little pay off in being girlfriend number 1. They received a bit more money and could wield a bit more power in complaining about other women in the mansion. If Holly told Hef that one woman was causing discontent with others, she'd be called up to be reprimanded. She may get a slightly better car and some other minor extras, i think Hef knew that #1 girlfriend was not a bonus so threw her some bonus's for the tonne of extra work she was doing (literally a 24/7 beck and call girl).

I think Holly was just deluded. She had been a bottom feeder for years before securing a girlfriend position. There were always a tonne of women trying to get their foot in the door - this entailed just being on the short list just for nightclub/sex nights which they got nothing in return for, but if they turned up enough times and put in the effort, eventually they could ask for live in girlfriend status. Bridget was the same, and that's probably why they formed an alliance. They were both treated like crap by all the other girlfriends due to the competition.

In one of the last episodes of the original 3 GND, even Kendra mentioned all the skanky ass ho's around the mansion and having to remember to keep her door locked. It appears that nothing had changed but it was just filmed and heavily edited for the sake of brevity for the show.

Source: I've read all the tell-alls and they all coincide enough to paint a pretty clear picture.

This was one of my favorite shows back in the day. Yes, the producers and Hef did a good job of making life at the mansion seem like one big sorority slumber party. I read Holly's book and went back to watch some episodes and if you look closely, you can see the cracks in the facade. Certain glances or comments which seemed innocuous now have meaning. I can't believe her self-esteem was SO low that she would stay with someone that toxic for so long. Or that no one ever stood up to him. He wasn't the President of the United States for god's sake. It seemed like they lived in terror wondering when his next flip-out would be.

As for the twins, I was definitely expecting her to rip them apart, but she seemed to like them. No idea why Crystal married Hef or what her motivation was to go back to him after running away. His will already was drawn up to give his money to his kids and the rest to charitable organizations. My guess is that Crystal would get maybe a million tops? That's chump change to spend days with a feeble, delusional old wart who would fall down and wet himself (as Holly says in her book). Talk about a nightmare.
