What the....????

I dont get the ending could someone please explain the ending to me?

In a nutshell:
Yo tells James she's pregnant. While he had always wanted to have a family with her, he know nows that having the child would only prolongue the curse (plus, it brings Yo into it, since she's now family). So he punches Yo repeatedly in the stomach, trying to induce a miscarriage, before cutting his wrists. He dies but Yo's baby survives, and the film ends with Yo back in the mansion, having a look around, presumably planning to move in. You'd think, knowing what she knows, she'd have an abortion by that stage but I guess it's the maternal instinct kicking in.

reply

Little Korean explained it well.

Yo must be crazy to keep that baby. She's even crazier to want to move back into that huge creepy mansion all by herself.

reply

Well, horror movie heroines aren't exactly known for their smarts.

I was actually kinda rooting for this ending:

He rips the unborn fetus--perhaps one of the TWINS--right out of Yo's uterus, bottles it up in one of those jugs, and jumpstarts the creepy-ass cycle of empire-building, family-expanding and mass-suicide all over again!

Okay, so the end result is kinda the same, but it would have been MUCH more evil this way, IMHO. And kinda zen, at least inasmuch as it's cyclical. I dunno...maybe this would have been the more predictable version, but at least it would have kept it "all in the family" instead of dumping the entire familial karma bomb on a complete outsider.

But wouldn't a fly-through of the completely-restored family mansion--full of newly-doomed descendants, reveling in their prosperity--have made a striking visual finale, coupled with that dignified extro music? And don't forget to add photos to the family shrine upstairs. ;)

Oh...and as for a plot summary, four words: sins of the fathers.

'Bout right?

I understand why James was beating on Yo but why did James kill himself as well? I can only assume it was to feed the ghost, but what did he get from the ghost in return?

reply

Okay, the basic storyline surrounding the house, child ghosts, blood feedings, and whatnot with James and his familial line I get(with Yo on her way to become th enewest member of this happy clan).

I need to understand why the folks not related to the clan by blood or marriage or bearing a child descendant became victims of the house. Why did they find themselves returning to the house at the witching hour, I mean, why did the house curse involve them. Did they all do something to piss off the house spirits? What did the inspector guy who lost his hands do? I wasn't too clear on this part of the storyline.

It was to finally put an end to the family curse, by wiping out the family blood-line. Didn't work out that way but heck, points to him for trying.

Sounds like you should have been the one writing/directing this movie instead of the hacks who did.

TYVM! Most kind of ya.

You've done an excellent job of explaining the film, btw, Little_Korean, imho. Such insight is a rare and precious commodity.

They were just horror movie fodder. Think of all those slasher films where the killer is doing what he does because of some grudge, yet kills just everyone except the one person he has the beef with!

Wow, I was confused on the ending of the film so I came here for answers and, lo and behold, Little Korean answered all of them for me!

Thanks Little Korean!

I see I'm two years too late, but the friends were killed because they were sticking their noses where they didn't belong. You see James as a child being told to beware of those who are not Yangs. So, those people, especially the detective, were too close and the ghost felt the need to get rid of them to protect the family secret and therefore the family line itself.
