What's this movie about.

I heard about this movie on the emmy awards. Now if I am guessing right, a movie that accurately and thoughtfully portrays the Latter Day Saints will probably never be nominated, so is this another movie falsely portraying them, their beliefs, and their religion.

I'm curious about that as well. Every movie that tries to depict the mormon religion does an uninspiring job. Really, they just depict a person who happens to be Mormon, but it's usually full of inaccuracies about the religion itself. It sets up a lot of false opinions about LDS people.

Well, if you don't like what you perceive as misconceptions about your religion, perhaps you should lobby to take away the right of artistic freedom of expression. Hey, in the short run it worked for Joseph Smith -- until somebody busted a cap in him for it, that is.

The day that a film geared towards the hyper-delicate sensibilities of mormons ever gets an Oscar nomination is the day I'll eat your quad. I mean, have you ever seen "The Book of Mormon Movie, Vol. I: The Journey?" It actually made "Battlefield Earth" look good.

Mormons seem so very thin-skinned. How many people do you actually think will see this 30 minute short? Plus, those who do are probably the more well educated who enjoy indie films on Sundance and IFC channels and who have already probably made their minds up about mormonism. So I doubt seeing the film "The Saviour" with its purported inaccuracies will change their minds one way or the other.

but did you ever stop to think that that's all people do focus on is the inaccuracies. people only pay attention to the rumors (like this film) and then they decide something about people just by that. like people decided that just from a few video clips on the news that middle eastern people are bad, but that was misrepresentation.

reply

oh yea the mormon church doesn't have pastors, they're called bishops, mission presidents, stake presidents, etc.

This film is about a young mormon who has an affair with a married woman and tries to keep it from his fellow missionaries while trying to convert her at the same time.

Now, I would like to say that I hope the Mormon community doesn't get too defensive about this film. It is a very good film that contains a great underlying message.

I have also met Peter Templeman and he explains that he tried to be as sensitive and accurate as possible when writing and making this short and genuinely does not want to offend the Mormon community.

Thank you alk79, for answering my question!

I find it amusing that someone who rejects the prejudice of films about Mormons is pre-judging a film they haven't seen...

I don't think anybody who hasn't seen it judged the film. That is why I posted the question, to find out what the movie was about.

No person of any race, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religion enjoys false perceptions. It's not just Mormons. I have come across numerous people who ask bizarre questions like, am I allowed to watch t.v., eat meat, talk to Jews, work at the mall etc etc. So it can be frustrating to constantly have to dispel wierd rumors. Mormons are just like anyone else in any other religion, good and bad, rich and poor, wierd and normal, etc.

It seems like every Hollywood thing that comes out puts these wierd constaints on members of the Mormon church and I am afraid that those who don't know much about the religion, believe it.

Hi - I am the composer of this film - if anyone is still out there discussing it!
Firstly it is not a Hollywood film it is an Australian film (Australian Film TV and Radio School) and therefore has a slightly more irreverant approach to the American characters in the film (in a gentle caricature style).

Peter did visit Mormons to discuss their way of life - for example in the final scene Malcolm is seen holding a cup of plain water rather than tea or coffee. Also due to legal sensitivities the word "mormon" is never mentioned and therefore it could be ANY organised religion of it's kind - therefore the use of the "pastor" - it's not meant to be an accurate representation of mormons. Just a general nod in their direction.

The story focuses on Malcolm - a character who is fervent but flawed - and this is what the film centres on - his struggle between his desires and his faith. It could be ANY religion he belongs to - the same story would have come through. His obsession with a woman he can't have.

The twists and turns in the story and the characterization are very black and incredibly amusing! Peter focused alot on the characters' expressions and reactions to each other.

The score is almost a direct representation of Malcolm's inner thoughts. We went for quirky, a bit confused, erratic, and supporting the action and dialogue to the nth degree.

Hope that helps!

I really liked it and thought it was hilarious. As "The Office" makes fun of office workers doesn't mean it's accurate, it's all in fun. This movie was not just a comedy, it's an overall enjoyable movie.

After watching the first minute I felt sick to my stomach. I am LDS and I served a mission. What this movie portrays is offensive. An ordained Elder committing such an act is usually excommunicated, which means they are no longer a member of the church. The law of chastity is a very sacred part of our Heavenly Father's Plan and this movie completely disregards that. To title this movie 'The Saviour' is offensive and a product of someone or some people who seem to be far from the Saviour. The people portrayed are distastefully misrepresented. The acting is terrible. Please don't waste your time by watching this movie.
