What is the last image of the ending supposed to mean?

I must say for one I really liked the movie as a whole and how it built up to the ending, but what was the last image we saw supposed to mean? When Amy took a picture of the dock, we see that woman standing on it? Who is it and what's her meaning?

reply

it's vanessa, and i don't think it really means anything except to end the movie on a scare,
she was standing there with some stuff, like a baby carriage or a chest, maybe, but i really didn't care enough to rewind and pause to see exactly what it is,
the movie is really good, though

I think it is vanesa showing her at peace.

Right, at peace after being stabbed by her own daughter, and spending years suffering in a basement, and eventually turning to murder. Hmm...yep, I can totally see Vanessa being at peace in her after life...NOT.

To theturning2: Uh... for a person in that state, don't you see death as a welcomed escape? Wouldn't that mean peace?
Would you really want to live Vanessa's life? As you said she spent all that time suffering in the basement, not much of a life, is it? and then what? Everything would be all right, her burns and her state of mind would all just go back to normal and she would lead a perfectly good life with her sister?

I don't know about you, but if I was her I would be glad to die and yes, that would mean I would finally have peace!

I would probably welcome death too & find respite in that. But in the mythology of ghosts, ghosts are born from a great wrong done unto them. Vanessa's death her was not done out of love for her or sympathy or giving her the peace she needs, but out of betrayal. In this case by both her daughter & little sister. The daughter did not know it was her mother but the sister did & she didn't seem to care. This is the type of ingredient that would've made a ghost out of Vanessa, on those who had betrayed her.

Its Vanessa, with a old fashioned wheel chair, staring at her killer, either foretelling the kid's future,ie, she's gonna get her, or thanking her for releasing her from her bondage.

I really like these movies, weird stuff, some frights, some hotties in wet clothes. I've just seen I Am Legend, and can't put in the same league, but enjoyed it just as much.

Now I have a question, what part of Montana is Canada in? Why not just put the setting in BC? Its getting old seeing the same scenery shot as anywhere US, soon the movies will be shot outside of Vancouver, but set in Arizona.

The woman was vanessa, but i'm really not sure why they put her there, it baffeled me and I can't make much sense of it other then she is going to possibly haunt or harm her own daughter. Maybe it was her way of showing that she was there? I don't know...

I think it's supposed to mean that even though Vanessa is dead, she's still going to haunt her own daughter and her sister too, probably.

Before being murdered by Amy, Vanessa had a human form and she was considered a 'Dark Thing' by her own daughter, because she was always stalking her and walking silently through the walls. She obviously looked like a 'Dark Thing' instead of an average mother to Amy After being stabbed, we assume that Vanessa is genuinely dead, but I think the end is supposed to mean that her presence doesn't fade away completely. Apparently, she only loses her human form, but she remains alive as a ghost (that's what I think).

I agree with the poster who said (in a sarcastic tone) that Vanessa clearly wasn't at peace with herself. If we think about it, nothing really good happens to her to be at peace.
- Everything starts with the car accident that ruins her life, because she ends up horribly scarred and disfigured. Most people (including her daughter) think she is dead and she is confined in a dark cellar, because she looks like a monster.
- The person who was at fault for her accident (Christy, in this case), moves on with her life and even though she develops borderline personality disorders, that's still better than being a 'monster' confinded in a cellar.
- Her husband has an affair with the nurse who was supposed to take care of her and even though Vanessa eventually gets her revenge, I suppose the idea of her husband cheating on her like that, is clearly never forgotten.
- After being confined for six years and considered dead by everyone, her sister finds her and promises to take care of her. Unfortunately, in the middle of the sweet reunion, her own daughter appears from behind and stabs her to death.

IMO, Vanessa is not at peace and even though Amy kills her, I think her image in the end, is supposed to mean that Vanessa is going to haunt her until she gets some kind of sweet revenge.

I assume that after John's death, Christy gets custody of Amy (despite of her personality disorders), so I can imagine Vanessa haunting them as a spirit trapped in the house. As a vindicitive ghost, she wouldn't like to see her sister taking her own daughter like that. It's like Christy is somehow stealing her life and Amy never really aknowleged her as a mother, so it would be a double betrayal in a way. I wouldn't be surprised if Vanessa was pissed and tried to ruin their lives from the beyond, hehe

The image is of Vanessa, & an old fashioned wheel chair.

I disagree with the viewers who said Vanessa was going to come back to haunt her daughter & sister.

Vanessa & Christy were extraordinarily close. Vanessa knows the accident was just that...an accident. She wouldn't wish any harm to her sister, because Christy did not MEAN to hurt her. Christy has suffered plenty the last 6 years, being in the psych wards, the visions, ostracized from the family & town. Remember how her old friend's husband was talking about her, when he didn't realize it was her? Everyone said she killed her sister (again, an accident), & that she wigged out at the funeral (I would, too, if I thought my sister was still alive in a coffin). That's a lot for someone of 14 to endure. She was punished plenty for the accident that hurt her sister. Christy loved her sister more than anything, they had that close connection, why would she harm her now? Christy was in the house for a while & never got harmed. Neither did Amy, really. Even if Amy was clonked on the head by her mother, she WAS chasing her with a knife, to kill "the dark thing." Her mother knocked her out to get away, not to kill her. She killed her mother in law, she could have easily killed her sister several times AND her daughter. And why would she come back to haunt her own daughter? Her daughter killed her, yes, but she had NO CLUE she was killing her own mother. She never saw pictures of her mother like that. She saw the monster she had been seeing, not her mom. Her mom was always coming through the closet to VISIT her daughter, not harm her. Remember Amy saying she always felt a hand on the back of her neck & fingers CARESSING her cheek? That's a motherly thing to do, while your sweet angel is sleeping. She loved her daughter, & the only way she could see her was to sneak in her room at night when she thought Amy was sleeping. She, in no way, wanted to harm her.

Yes, Amy killed her, but frankly, I think she was relieved, as someone above mentioned, to be set free from her hell on earth. Have you ever heard real life burn victims talk about the pain the endure? The pain NEVER goes away. It never stops. Her burns were severe, & she was most likely in constant SEVERE pain. What kind of life is that to live? To top it off, she witnessed her husband have an affair with her nurse, watched her mother in law, nurse, & husband slam her into the basement for 6 years, lost her sister cause Christy moved away, & was kept TRAPPED in a basement, kept away from her daughter. No contact with anyone but the psychotic mother in law, & cheating husband & nurse. What *I* felt I saw in Vanessa's eyes upon being stabbed by her daughter was relief. Everyone kept saying the entire movie, "Vanessa is at peace. Move on." At peace? Trapped in a basement, unable to speak, virtually alone, & in constant severe pain? What kind of peace is that? I'd much rather be dead, & her daughter did her a favor.

Remember, Vanessa had Christy in the water & could have killed her then & there. In fact, Christy surrendered to it & was just going to die. Then Vanessa spotted the necklace she had given her beloved sister 6 years prior, & a part of the old Vanessa came back. She had been basically turned INTO a monster, but she was still Vanessa. She saw the necklace, realized it was her sister, & swam back up & let Christy live. Then she grabbed Christy's hands & communicated for the last time, showing Christy everything she had gone through, explaining the premonitions/visions. Christy now had all the answers, & I think when she said, "I'm going to take care of you, Vanessa," that she meant it & really would have. But Amy did her mom a favor & ended 6 long years of suffering.

I'm not certain what the image of the antique wheelchair was supposed to mean, but the ghost of Vanessa was her former, beautiful, normal self. That, to me, indicates she WAS finally at peace, & finally back to being Vanessa (even just as a spirit), & no longer the monster in the disfigured & painful body she was trapped in. I think if it had a sinister meaning, like she was going to haunt her daughter & sister, they would have showed the "monster" image of Vanessa, not the normal one. She was released from her hell.

I think Christy will raise her neice, & they seemed to have a bond right away. In my mind, Christy will be more emotionally/mentally "normal," because the visions will stop. Her sister was mentally reaching out to her with the visions, and now that she really IS dead, Christy will finally be at peace, too.

Now...those are just my thoughts.... :-)

Here here alicenwndrln! Thats exactly what I think. However if poor Amy ever grows up and starts digging around she might find out she killed her mum.......

I think everyone is overanalysing this;

The end image is Vanessa standing next to an old fashioned wheelchair looking back at her daughter taking the picture.

It's a thankyou. Her daughter freed her from the chair. Vanessa appears in good health, no burns, she's happy and she's standing beside what had become of her life.

I agree with everything alice said. I watched this last night on TV and when I saw that image, I didn't think of that as the typical ending of a horror film trying to scare us or meaning that she would haunt her daughter. I actually thought it was a sign of love from her to her own daughter. I think she just want her daughter to see her mother.

Agree! You said it all perfectly.
