Was this a good movie?

So I've been reading alot of mixed reviews throughout this board and I can't really make up my mind whether or not I want to see this movie. Can someone answer for me why it was a good movie, and why it wasn't? I don't want any biased opinions, I want to know both sides of the story as to why this movie is so loved or hated?

For the most part, the people posting here who hated it haven't seen it, so you can discount those opinions right off the bat. I have seen a handful from people who didn't like it--primarily parents who took their children--but for the most part, the reaction from those who have seen it has been "gently positive."

I gave it a 7/10. Here's why I liked it:

1. despite being live action, it does everything it can to be true to the original cartoon, even including a variation on the Super Energy Pill.

2. the first half of the movie is spent exploring what the "boy and his dog" relationship would be if the dog could actually speak and tell the boy what was on his mind. Those scenes are my favorite part of the movie.

3. Peter Dinklage and Patrick Warburton as Simon Bar Sinister and Cad. Really fun performances from both of them--"over the top" in the good way.

4. Jim Belushi isn't given any of the comedy load to lift, so he's actually tolerable.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Yes if you have a very easily pleased little child who likes puppies, but even then, no.

Maybe if you were really really drunnk - liked blacked out drunk, maybe you would enjoy the movie. Note that I said 'enjoy' not 'like'.

I'd say this was worse than Inspector Gadget, and that's saying a lot, and tons worse than Bullwinkle which I enjoyed a little (I gave it a 5). I actually liked Scooby Doo so I won't even begin to compare the two.

Jason Lee's voice acting was if you stuck him in a beige room that sucked any emotion and life out of someone and left him there for a month before recording started. Why they cast him is beyond my imaginings except that Disney just felt that he's popular right now.

Jim Belushi must need money. I generally like him but not in this one.

It just seemed like they just took the first shot of every scene no matter how mediocre it was and rolled with it. Most of the acting had no heart whatsoever and that's sad because I've seen a lot of these people play in other shows and movies much better. Amy Adams as Polly, and who the hell decided Polly was going to be this ugly dog???, actually did a good job but she seems to do well in anything you cast her in. Perhaps she is the only one with any professional pride.

Avoid this unless it's on TV, there's nothing else to watch or read or do, and you want to waste 90 minutes.

Don't listen to what the rude people have to say Resident Evil Fan, if you really want to see it so badly, then I say go for it. I saw the movie once back in August when it was out and I thought it was cute. I give it a 9/10.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I did actually end up seeing this movie and I didn't think it was all that bad. I didn't think it'd be great at all, in the beginning, be then it turned out to be okay.
Underdog was so cute.

I thought it wasn't bad. It just depends what you're in to. It was entertaining enough but it's not a great movie by any means, just good fun.

War 10/10
Die Hard 10/10
Underdog 7/10

Yeah exactly, just a good chill-out movie when you have nothing to do. Not a spectacular masterpiece of a film, by any means.

I was a fan of the show...when it was NEW back in the SIXTIES. So when I saw the trailer I cringed at the thought of another childhood delight TRASHED by THE MAN. So we can say I had very low expectations of this. But since the wife and I are fans of talking animals, ( in real life or film) we rented the bitch. And it wasnt bad. Wasnt 'NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN', but it was a reasonable ' sit on the couch, eat junk food, and watch the talking dog beat guys up' movie. Had trepidations about some ex-skateboarder/tv star Jason Lee trying to replace the inimitable Wally Cox in the 'Underdog voice department', but alas I got over it quick enough that I wasnt dwelling on it the whole movie. ( ie: " ooooh my GOD, THATS NOT UNDERDOGS VOICE! DIG UP THE DEAD GUY!!!") Another aspect that may have changed my vibe was the fact that they showed an entire episode of the original series elsewhere on the disc. And after watching it, I decided it sucked, ( in a quaint way mind you). So maybe Underdog wasnt the wonderful thing my childhood memory seems to think it was, I mean, just cus he got a friggin MACYS PARADE BALLOON out of the deal doesnt mean he's won an Emmy does it? So, was it a good movie? On a sliding scale of good movies/ crappy movies, somewhere in the 'disposable fluff movie' section, this is up there in the RENT IT department. Smoke some pot first, you'll be fine.

It's a good flick for kids (under 10 years of age), and relatively painless for parents (like me) who remember the cartoon show.

Though I would say if you don't have kids, or remember the cartoon show, there's really no need to bother.

I rented it all for myself and had a great time.
Silly but very fun.
Maybe wouldn't buy it right out, but it's a PERFECT rent, and a nice pre-rented-10$-discount material

I'm 23... and for what it is, I thought it was great.

WTF do people EXPECT? It was a great family film.
