Seclusion shot for $100k?? It looks like a million!!

THIS movie is THE poster child for ALL filmmakers working with a low-budget!! You have got to see the way this was shot...it's FANTASTIC! Kudos to first-time director, Steve Mudd, for producing a script HE WROTE that had me riveted to my seat. WOW! What a terrific film! BUY it, people! It's an inspiration, BIG TIME!

Hmmm... how's the story and acting though?

In my subtle, biased opinion, the acting is terrific. Top to bottom, I love my cast. We've had positive feedback for every performance. Rent it and see. Or buy it... I won't comment on the story as I'm really biased there and too close to give an objective opinion.

what are you? Director or producer?

reply

My god, you are so cynical. Whoever it is that wrote that comment is neither the director nor the producer. How do I know? I'm the director and producer. That comment does smell strangely like it was written by a friendly hand. :) Oh well... Can't fault people trying to be supportive.

I like your attitude. I'll check out your movie ;)

Cynical? More like he has a common sense. The author of that post registered with imdb for the sole purpose of advertising this movie (otherwise known as a 'plant'), making it highly unlikely that he has no ties to any of the film crew and virtually demoting the validity of his comment to nil. I have said this before, and will again, these IMDB 'plants' are unnecessary, ineffective (in most cases counter-productive as most users only read comments from prolific authors) and most irritating. I have nothing against indie flicks and I understand there's a need to self-advertise (at least you're honest about being the director/prod.), but this is just pure manipulation, and for the sake of indie flicks themselves, I seriously hope they stop doing it here. Perhaps some day they'll realise how counter-productive it actually is and just stop (or hopefully IMDB will start checking user comments for validity, or colour-code usernames by post count). Anyhow, in my mind, any movie that needs this kind of advertisement is immediately discarded anyway (at least in the absence of any 'real' user comments, which is usually the case), if a movie deserves it, the imdb 'buzz' will generate itself around such a movie, regardless of budget or theatrical penetration (which is/was the beauty of IMDB).

Good luck with the movie, though :)

This is probably the wisest thing I have ever read at IMDB. I totally agree. Really nicely put. Thanks jacobvdm.

Yup, if their filmmaking skills are on a par with their finesse at planting bogus comments, this deal must be pretty bleak indeed. Doesn't take an economics degree to know that when $100k of turds looks like $1 million worth of turds, ya still got turds.

So Jacob.... have you seen the movie or not? I can assure you that there has been no concerted effort to plant positive reviews of Seclusion. I completely understand the negative vibes that accompany that sort of promotion. We haven't done it. Whoever posted that was likely a friend or supporter of us who posted of their own volition without prompting by us. If anything, I have discouraged my friends from writing unnecesarily glowing reviews. Whoever wrote the review wrote it because they believe in me or the film. I appreciate it entirely. We couldn't have gotten our film out there without the support of people like that.

I myself rated my film 10 stars. Why? Not because it's a 10-star film but because if I don't rate it 10 stars, who will? This is my movie and I put my heart, soul, and money into it. If I put 2 stars, then why would anyone bother to rent it?

So I guess what I'm saying, in the spirit of self-promotion, is rent Seclusion. Or buy Seclusion. Then write a real review. Or, read one of the two "real" reviews out there (links below). Is Seclusion as good as Schindler's List? No. Are there better films out there? Yes. Is it the best we could do with the resources at hand? Absolutely. And I'm proud to put it out there.

It's also worth noting that Missy Crider, the star of our film, has an arc on the next season of 24. Very cool...

No need to be such a c**k. Steve Mudd seems to be following his heart. He is sincere, is doing what I would like to have been able to do, and though it may not be a classic, it's an honest effort. That being said - I'll be seeing it and post an honest appraisal of it in the next couple of days.

Congrats Mr. Mudd on living your dream - I sold out and ended up in medical school.

BTW, I have no affiliation with this movie and only know about it by having seen it posted on a board that ends with .....aza.

Geez... cut the guy some slack

Hey Steve,

I see your movie is available for download at various torrent sites. I hope that doesn't upset you too much. A lot of us use it to experience media before we buy it, others well you know.

I will get it and check it out. Buy it, if it's appealing.

As for the rude person above. I would simply pay no attention to the troll.

Congratulations as well to you on realizing your dream, not many of us do it.

Some of you need to take a chill pill. What's the big deal if the guy is trying to promote his movie? He's not trying to hide the fact that he's affiliated with the filming of this movie. Just because he doesn't have the funds to force feed it into everyone's living rooms like the major movie labels do doesn't mean he can't promote his film by word of mouth. The people who say they wouldn't watch a movie, because the person or people involved in making the movie are out there promoting it in every way they can, are just ridiculous. Just go watch Rocky 6 or 7 or whatever!

After re-reading the posts above, I can see what the fuss is about. Mr. Mudd may not have intentionally set out to promote his own movie, but the title of this thread is shameless... "Seclusion shot for $100K?? it looks like a million??"

Comeon, that almost sounds like one of the spams you get in your mail box - "Increase your penis size in days"

Whether or not the originator of the thread was a plant is not THAT important to me, just the fact that it's such a cheesy plant.

Half the time the only way I even find out about a new film is thru "sharing". Who ever would have thought that the entire Asian horror craze started when someone decided to share those films on the net? It's a shame that the only reason most people will come to this board to find out about this film is due to the fact that it's being distributed on the net; loss of income for the filmmakers, but on the plus side, recognition for the filmmakers..

reply

I'm a total Torrent virgin. I have no idea how the technology even works. I've had a long standing joke that I would be honored if our movie was pirated. It means that somebody thinks it's good enough to pirate. I'd be curious if how many people have downloaded it... In reality, it's probably not much of a financial loss. Those who torrent often are probably less likely to buy anyway. I'm more concerned about a "professional" pirate who takes the film to Thailand or Japan where we have a currently untapped opportunity to make additional money.

In the ideal world, everyone interested in Seclusion would buy it. I make more money that way. Second choice is, of course, rental, but because we're not currently in Blockbuster with a revenue sharing deal, I don't particularly care if you rent it or not. Netflix is unlikely to buy additional copies... King Soopers is unlikely to buy more copies... So if you torrent it, great. To me, it's just like if you rented it. If you like the film, tell a friend. Buy it for a family member. If you don't like it, well, it's only 86 minutes long so it's not that much time out of your life...

I'll make a deal. If you buy the film and don't like it, I'll send you back my cut of what you purchased. Just send me your copy so I can sell it again...
