was giving Tommy “Native American powers” a good idea?

My hat goes off the makes of prey for having a ethnic minority as lead rather that the usual “Mightily Whitey” and the sprit walk element was a good gameplay idea.
But it leaves a bad taste to include a spiritual concept into an otherwise straight science-fiction shooter. In relative cultural terms it’s about as logical as having Mario battle Satan because he is Italian therefore roman Catholic.

No, it's not. It was made to create a brand-new character with powers that have never seen before, with references to a little-known culture. Of course such a move wouldn't work with Mario, but only because Mario is an already established character which has nothing to do with the supernatural.
On the other hand, consider this: a survival horror with a brand-new main character, an exorcist of Italian descent who has a cool name like Lorenzo Cavalcanti (as opposed to an uninspired name like Mario) and who speaks with a realistic slight Italian accent (as opposed to an exaggerated, over-the-top Italian accent like Mario). Imagine that the graphics of the game are photorealistic and the main character (who fights demons and devils inspired from the Roman Catholic tradition) has powers that stem from a reinterpretation of Italian traditions about prayers, rituals, relics and amulets. Personally, I would buy a game like that on day one.

Of course it was a good idea... do you know how many games there are based on Greek, Roman, European, Japanese and Chinese myths and powers???? Too many
