A decent remake, but give me 1976

Not a bad movie. But when you try to compare it to the original, it just doesn't hold up. The 76' version had:

--Lee Remick. A far superior actress than the semi-boring Julia Stiles.

--Gregory Peck. (Need one say more?) Liev Schreiber was decent, but he can't hold up to the dramactic acting and commanding presence Peck brought to the movie.

--Mrs Baylock. Bille Whitelaw played that role like it was meant for her. Mia Farrow was a yawner in comparison.

--The soundtrack. This movie lacked a even decent one. The 76's soundtrack was chilling, and was perfect for the movie.

Does anyone know why this movie was remade but not the second one?

This version was trying so hard not to be the 76 version, they fcked themselves in the process of making it.

1)While I like Julia Stiles as an actress, (and let's look at the Going to Church scene from the staircase to the church), Stiles did not have the "chops" to take on a role acted by one of the greatest actresses of her time. It just made Stiles look weak and ineffectual.

In that scene, Remick acted with her inner Kathy, her eyes, and her body stance; Stiles just acted attitudal and then "scared" in the limo. Remick, in the limo didn't just accept that the kid was sick, and was trying to figure out what was going on, again, eyes, body language, inner Kathy...

2) Lieve Schreiber, like the movie, was trying not to be Gregory Peck, that he was imitating Gregory Peck. BIG MISTAKE. He's another one that I like, but if you take on a role that was done by one of the greats, HAVE THE CHOPS to do it right.

3) Mia Farrow: Well, after throwing Kathy out the window in the original (AND TALK ABOUT ACTING WITH EYES....THAT INNER TURMOIL OF KATHY AND THE INNER EVIL OF BAYLOCK IN THAT SCENE MAKES IT SO FCKING MEMORABLE WITH THE FACT THAT NOT ONE WORD WAS SPOKEN IN THAT SCENE, oh, yeh, Mia Farrow injects airbubble into iv. yeh, NOT SCARY AND NOT SUSPENSEFUL AT ALL. Admit it, who saw the ORIGINAL in the movies and was climaxed by the "out the window" scene.....c'mon now.

4) The Sound Track.....Jerry Goldsmith rocked with his original soundtrack to the original movie which is memorable even 40 years later. It set the mood for the original and kept it going right on til the end.....this new one pfffft. In effectual and unmemorable.

Nice try, but the newer version didn't work at all and should have never been made. Never mess with perfection.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I've always thought the same about this horrendous remake. Especially about the hospital window sequence. When I saw that redicukpis air bubble thing I was like. Who the hell came up with this.

The original scene. No words and scary as hell. I guess today people making movies would think that's stupid.

I like both the original and remake but as you say the original is better. I like almost everything about the remake except the cast. I didn't like the new actors and didn't find them as charismatic as the cast in the original except for Damien and Mrs. Baylock. I just didn't think they fit. But I do like how they respected the original and didn't change things that didn't need to be changed. I do wish they made a sequel though. Seems this one was made to mark the 6-6-06 date and so they didn't make another.

I totally agree.

I really wanted a sequel too. And when I think of how liev striker resembled damian in the movie I wonder if that was intentional in case they remade the second and third. I mean to say maybe they had the intent to have liev come back and play adult damian. Live has the demeanor and looks to play the antitrust. The could have given him a beard maybe so he did not look exactly the same. Would look even more sinister with a short beard.

The original is way better, though the remake has some good moments. The 76 film has better atmosphere, acting and the soundtrack is just overall superior.

I actually disliked this one the first time viewing it, but just watched again and it's pretty decent. I like all the actors in this especially some of the supporting cast. The child actor and the character of Damien was the biggest negative of the film for me, in the original Damien was less aware and less annoying.
