My thoughts, for what they're worth:
(a) There are, unfortunately, a lot of sick and twisted people out there - it's just that it's a much bigger world than them alone, so most people are fortunate enough not to come into direct contact with them.
(b) He probably thought he was doing her a favour in some sick and twisted way and that she should be grateful for his interest in her (I seriously doubt he expected things to end quite the way they did).
(c) He may not have been expecting her to remember much of what had happened after what he'd given her, so maybe he didn't think she'd be affected much by it.
(d) He wasn't the first guy, and won't be the last, who was thinking predominantly with a part of his anatomy that wasn't located in his skull, and with being encouraged by his mates as well that makes for a dangerous combination. (I remember doing a women's self defence course where we were taught how to fight back, but were then recommended not to bother if we were being attacked by a guy whose mates were with him. As the instructor said, no guy wants to be shown up by a woman in front of his mates, and he's unlikely to give in in front of them!)
