It was on MTV tonight and I kinda watched it until football came on. Alot of people may not be able to relate to it as it seems the movie is aimed at one specific audience and thats fine. We need to have music, movies, books etc coming from all different sources whether someone likes them or not. ATL was just ok to me. I'm sure the "stereo-typical" pitbull in the run down pens scene didn't make any friends with PETA/SPCA/pet lovers though.

I agree that this flick is very underrated. I expected it to use the usual tropes of a glamorized gangster lifestyle. I know that is a prejudiced thing to think, but I mean the way it was marketed, and the types of flicks dealing with underclass predominantly black neighborhoods are usually some pretty shabby stereotypes of what it may be like. The stereotypes live so much in our media that it can actually warp your world view a bit. The rough stuff is definitely out there, especially amongst marginalized sections of societies, but the mass media view of things is totally blown out of proportion.

It was a really charming flick, man. The main character was not some hip hop spitting disciple of the thug life. He is a tough man with a mind and heart, *beep* I can relate to. This movie should not even be compared with the standard gangster thug life flicks you see. I really enjoyed it.

American Graffiti really is a pretty good choice to bring up, man. Boyz In The Hood has a somewhat vague resemblance to it, in the sense that it is a coming of age flick set in a tough neighborhood. The settings in both flicks really almost become characters in and of themselves. I would say that Boyz In The Hood deals a lot more with the conditions of the environment the characters have to deal with. The neighborhood is pretty much hijacked both by folks with the power of politics and the power of the gun who really just dont give a *beep* about anybody else.

I thought it was a solid film and I enjoyed it. I don't get the hate for it.

I enjoyed it much more then I thought I would and I actually find myself checking it out pretty often when I catch it on cable.

I think the biggest problem is when it was being marketed they made it seem like it was going to be a Southern version of Boyz in the Hood or Menace II Society?

When people finally went out and saw it they were pretty pissed off and in all honesty had every right to be.

I don't think anyone has the right to be pissed off. Anyone upset that the film isn't a southern version of Boyz In The Hood should take issue with only themselves. Why go into a film with preconceived notions on what its about? The previews suggested nothing that offered it as a gangster flick. That's just as bad as judging a book by its cover. Too many have very limited knowledge and have missed out on good books, movies, art, etc and its their own shallow minded, judgmental faults.

Why is that? No animals were seen being mistreated in this flick. PETA shouldn't have a problem, dogs were only seen being fed so, whats wrong with that? To draw any other conclusion is speculation, wrongful speculation.
