His father sunk the boat in order to prevent his mother from rowing out.
Still, his father is tired of all the troubles and tensions that his mother
has caused.
Therefore, his father chose to do nothing when he heard his mother
rummaging through the cupboard, looking for and taking pills, darting out from
the house.
He definitely knew something will happen if he chooses to stand aside, doing
nothing. And Hallam's mother ended up drowning in the lake.
Hallam sorts thing out and pays Kate a final visit.
It's recognizable that Kate is already with someone.
Therefore, she didn't let Hallam in.
They exchange few words. Hallam says he will come back maybe 4 years later.
Kate says something like, "Hope I am still young and beatiful."
They hug then Hallam leaves.
The last scene is Hallam walking alone on the street, smiling.
