What a stupid bloody film.

The psychology was ridiculous and unworkable, and none of the characters was engaging, likeable or even interesting. Best use of Edinburgh I've ever seen in a movie, truly beautiful and quirky with great cinematography, though the fact that none of the characters had an Edinburgh accent only added to the cheesiness. And one other thing. Why did Lothian & Borders Police investigate the mother's suicide, when the city the death happened in was identified as Glasgow? It would have been Strathclyde Police who investigated in that case. A small thing, for sure, but details like this really grate for people who come from the area of Scotland this was filmed in and who know the difference. Maybe David Mackenzie didn't.

Who knows.

Or cares.

Screw the nut, Davey, for suckfake.

Yeah i agree with most of what you say except for the accents. I'm from Edinburgh and to be honest i thought Jamie Bell and Sophia Myles accents were bang on. I would presume the characters who don't have an Edinburgh accent are probably from Glasgow or another area of Scotland? Except for that though you're right.

It's okay! I'm a limo driver!

I'm Australian and obviously can't respond to some of your comments; but I really liked the film. I love quirky unpretentious Brit films. I admit that I often have to put the subtitles on when it is a rich Scottish accent but I didn't have to with this film; except for that other, older kitchen hand. Perhaps the aristocracy have a less broad accent?

Anyway it was a delight to see some beautiful scenery and architecture. Other Scottish films, I just saw Red Road, seem to centre around industrial working class areas (unless they're historic films like 'Rob Roy' etc etc). I recommend this movie.

I loved this film. The acting, filming, and soundtrack were excellent. Thanks for the recommendation, chatterley333; I'll defininetly check it out.

its a bloody brilliant film!

I'd Rather Be His Whore Than Your Wife!

The language was toned down, made more palatable for foreign ears. Plus McKenzie is middle class and doesn't speak with a thick brogue.

And it's still a crap film.

A stupid movie only if you no imagination. Unpredictable, unconventional and original. A fantastic movie for anyone who wishes to see something far different - and far better - than the standard fare.

I'm from Glasgow and wondered about the Lothian police involvement as well. This type of thing annoys me. I love to see Scottish films so I was looking forward to this. But I had expected it to deal more with Jamie Bell's investigation into his mother's death, than his strange relationships with women. In general I was slightly disappointed, although Jamie Bell was a revelation.

The psychology and characterisation is an issue that you need to take up with Mister Jinks, what with him being the one that wrote it and all.
Personally, however, I found it fascinating and believable, but then again it is my favourite book.

I agree on the cinematography point though. Very good indeed.
