Started okay, then got all stupid

Seriously, it all started well and it was looking really promising until Hallan goes to Edinburgh, that is. As if Sophia Myles would even look at him twice! Seriously.

Plus this is the most stupid and crigeworthy inmature dialogue I have ever seen on screen:

What have you there?
A Willy
A Pussy
etc
etc
etc

How cringeworthily childish was that?

reply

Its all down to taste -although I think you're being bit of a prude oh society says blah bah is childish. That’s exactly why the scene works. Perhaps it would be more adult for them to talk about current affairs/ but what the hell would that mean. .
Personally I think
sophias god awful dialogue on ‘sometimes I like it sweet sometimes I like it sour’ was cringeworthy. I don’t know why it infuriates me so much it just seemed like it was dressing up emotion in this ‘this is what someones written on the page for me to say moment’, the guy who wrote that line wernt human.
ANYWAY

And it seems to me like ur calling Jamie ugly! Whats peeing me off is critics r as wel ‘oh why would she fall for him so unbelievable’
Whats wrong with u people real life couples r much harder to fathom than this!
Heres a list of possible reasons kate had a relationship with hallam, feel free to pick one,

1.its not all about the physical dude-and jamies not ugly!

2. her sex scenes came across as a kind of rape.now does hallam look like the kind of guy to drag her face down over the hallway carpet. It may sound oppealing to a few but kates face told us that’s not what she wanted. Her scenes with hallam are so romantic compared to this.

3.social life non existent. Alasdair paying her the attention of a fish, Maurice whos what like 60! Oral sex guru ewen bremner ,the rest of the aged deadbeat kitchen staff, why would nt she be interested by the enthusiastic mysterious 18 year old?

4. Plus she ucked up dude. Shes been married-tried the conventional relationship thing-and other reasons I was too busy paying attention to hallam to notice.i don’t see alasadair or anyone else begging her to sleep with them . if she never found hallam appealing before surely that alone tipped the scale.oh yeah plus alcohol! not particularly deep but true nonetheless.

It's not that he's ugly, it's that he looked too young for her and he was at the bottom of the ladder career wise. I just can't imagine a pretty girl like her who is into older relatively handsome married men would be attracted to a scrawny penniless teenager. If she had been younger looking, maybe I could believe it, but she wasn't.

Okay, even if I can suspend belief for a while and pretend that she would like him, I still think the terrible cringeworthy dialogue of those lines took away all the positive points about the film. Oh and actually that incredibly inmature dialogue also took away all the romanticism of the moment when they finally do get it together. By that stage, I couldn't care less if this couple didn't work out or what happened to them.

I'm probably older than you dear, and yes, it was totally unabelievable that a girl like that would like Jamie Bell, especially as he played him. And yes, the 'stupid dialogue' DID take away all the romanticism. 'What have you got there?' 'A Willy'. 'A Pussy'. etc. I think your the one who totally needs to GROW UP, seriously. Are you ten or something? Next time you date somebody, try that stupid line out BEFORE you have even kissed, see what they think, hey? Romantic? I don't think so, dumbo.

Which award? Never heard of it. Let me guess, they are awarding themselves?

I agree, their relationship isn't really meant to be romantic. it's kind of depraved actually. she looks like his mum remember.

i think she would've been atractedto him because she had been in a "relationship" with a man who was clearly uninterested in her. Hallam was enthusiastic about work and interested in her, she found that more appealling than she found his youth unappealing. If the situation was reversed (hallam was older kate was younger) there wouldn't be the same argument. This is more a societal norm issue that a realism issue. older women do date younger men.

OK, the willy/pussy etc. and the 'Sometimes I like it sweet...' were pretty cringeworthy lines...but I liked that. The characters weren't meant to be heroes speaking in beautiful flowing poetry, and lines like that just emphasised that they were normal people capable of saying stupid, cringeworthy things...

We'll Shanghai Wendy!

oh now thats just reaching. although a critic said 'i dont see how hallam could come up with the -(oh that erections) because i'm thinking of work line'because he's not experienced enough for it or something. and i kinda agree i def think the writers were striving for 'perfect' dialogue or at least perfect moments. ok ok what the hell am i arguing anyway I still like the movie. AND THE KATE THING WAS TOTALLY BELIEVABLE BUT SOPHIA MYLES IS OVERRATED

Really agree with "Time for herois" I like the way they are, even it not so smart or clever dialogs. I bet it could happen to the real life when we be with someone we fancy! (to say such a stupid things) ;-)It make they are real human in the film too. It is not stupid romantic film, it is unpredictable sharming film.

I thought the film was great, really enjoyed it.
Both Jamie Bell and Sophia Myles were very plausible in their roles even if their characters were strange to say the least. Accents were great, not the usual forced "Scottish" accents you hear - Mike Myers, Mel Gibson etc.

As for the relationship between Katie and Hallam, I had a similar experience of a good looking professional older woman hitting on me when I was 20 and I am no Brad Pitt. So don't rule it out.

The whole movie was cringeworthy

To everyone saying Kate/Sophia wouldn't give him the time of day because of the age difference. She is not THAT much older than he is. She was born in 1980. No way she could be old enough to be his mother! Their have been real life celeb couples with bigger age gaps like Demi/ Ashton and Justin Timberlake/ Cameron Diaz. No big deal, I think she was sick of having no attention paid to her and JB character gave her the attention. Plus they were both quirky as you could tell in the dialogue! To me their were 3 cringeworthy things she said 1. "You're so beautiful I want to suck the ---- of the last man who ----ed you! " A pick up line that someone said to her that actually worked! 2. " what do you call yours? Willy" 3. My ---- stinks! But again she was quirky like him bc most chicks wouldn't bang a guy with whom she's a dead ringer for his dead mother! I liked her character best actually. Although, I thought the whole step mother fling would of been interesting to of explored more of!
