Why Paunovic lied?

Why did Paunovic make up all those lies about Safet,is it because he was picking at him all the time?

reply

Probably because Pasic punched him.

reply

Probably because he misunderstood the "elektricni orgazam" joke.

I see it as a clash of generations going very wrong (as often seen in real life)... what was special is the time and place it occured... on one side we have the faided and broken figure of authority unable to cope with the new wave that is not only knocking at the door, but is allready in...faliure to timely acknowledge the fact of different times (and problems), combined with traditional mesures resulted with a drastic reaction from the other side... the side which sees the current ideals as bogus and reacts in a overly provoked, bold manner... the irony had to come out sometime and somehow, and it did in the most relentless fashion...as we all later witnessed..

it's because Paunovic is an idiot, he was making problems from the beggining, until the very end i guess it was all just a joke for him

reply

He is special category of people, characteristic for Balkans.

reply

He lied because that is what this stupid script requires him to do.

Paunovic is by far the least convincing character in the entire movie. He is so poorly concieved and written. Overnight, he goes from a small-time wise-ass to this raging freak of nature without any plot justification whatsoever.

This entire movie functions and operates in a very dopey and artificial way, and the character of Paunovic is one of the better examples (among many others) of just how inept and crappy this movie is.

I totally agree!!!!!!! Very well said man :)

I don't agree with either things you said. the character is justified. his stoned jokes stop being so funny when, instead of getting out of the army, he has to face the press and worship tito and the communist party. at that moment he sees no way out but to dig in deeper into lies. and don't forget that in these last scenes they are drunk and stoned all the time.
i think it is a great movie and would recommend it. too bad it wasn't more popular here in belgrade.
great music, great photography, great acting

We had a huge discussion about Sergej Trifunovic (aka Ljuba Paunovic) actions after seeing the movie. Which I guess is the point of every movie isn't it? To make you think after...
If you see the extras on the DVD Karaula (btw they are GREAT!) it is mentioned that Ljuba is a Belgrade punk that does things to mess with others without being aware of the consequences after..Basicly, you have two options: you can try to find deeper meaning or some hidden message about the war that will start soon after in ex-Yugoslavia or you can look at it as an irony, where things are not really related to future war but are a snap shot of a time. Bunch of young guys which do not have too much in common except that they have to be together for a year in one place in the middle of nowhere.
I though that friendship between Croatian and Serbian was very well done..they are both young horny boys in early 20-ties but they are dealing with situation differently.
Sinisa (the Croatian doctor) is a more serious and a quiet one but falls inlove and starts a forbitten afair.
Ljuba is a Belgrade punk screwing anything that walks, taking nothing seriously and without a major malice plan manages to destroy lives of others.
And than Poruucnik Safet Pasic - unfaithful husband who takes advantages of his position to turns his private affair into political incident.

I think the movie more shows how incredible fragile the life is: the balance between tragedy and comedy is a very weak one..

OK I read all the stuff you guyz wrote about the Paunovic's motive and I still think that reason why he did it is because of that slap... At least that's what the director wanted to be the reason. And that's very stupid reason. Paunovic's character in first 2/3 of film is completely different than that one at the end of the film. He's shown as a great life-loving guy with great sense of humor and than he suddenly becomes a complete lunatic just because of that slap (!?) Sergej is a great actor but his character just doesn't hold the water... not even de niro would pull this one out

I think Paunovic is simply a weakling and a coward. And has a problem with structure and discipline, a classic punk. He just had to make up some excuse to get away from Karaula and Pasic and when Orhideja questioned his motives he just bitched out and started lying. And frankly, he's also stupid. This is one of those movies I hate watching, because the bad and corrupted guy wins. Its quite common in Yugoslav cinema. Im also from former Yugoslavia, so i know. I think what director Rajko Grlic wanted to show is that noone is clean, all the main characters are guilty of something: Pasic of trying to cover up his syfillis by lying about Albanians planning to attack them, Sinisa of banging his commander's wife (not really the greatest sin of all perhaps lol, but still), Safet's wife of being unfaithful and ofc Paunovic of being an imbecile and a liar. And on top of all that, a sneaky murderer. Sinisa also didn't want to give up Paunovic, thats a sin and i don't get why he did it.

My theory on Feds is that they're like mushrooms: feed them *beep* keep them in the dark.
