Best Croatian movie ever

I just saw it yesterday and I must say that I was surprised by how GOOD it was. I actually didn't wan't to see it, but my friend talked me into it (thank you very much)! It's such a great movie, so funny that I was laughing my heart out, but then again so sad in the end that I ended up crying!
And by the way, am I the only one who found Toni Gojanovic so HOT????

Did you watch Oprosti za Kung Fu?
Now that is a good movie.

reply

This is not only Croatian movie. This is Yugoslavian movie.

reply

Yugoslavia? What's that?

reply

Yugoslav what?
I't 2006 not 1986 my friend. Yugoslavia is 6 ft under for a while!!!!
This is Croatian movie full stop
Based on croatian novel. Written by Croat. Directed by Croat. Financed 70% by Croatia. Main character is Croat. And main villan is Serbian. And the only one that stay alive at the and is Croat!!!

reply

Let's see on this way: Financed by all of 6 ex-Yugoslavian republics. Filmed in Macedonia. Main characters are: Croat, Sebian, Muslim and Macedonian. Croat is not the only guy who stays alive. Serb also does. Lets say that Croatia is most responsible for this movie but don't forget your neighbours my ex-countryman.

Mirza, buy encyclopedia and you will find aout all what you want about Yugoslavia. History doesn't start in 1992.

It's Croatian movie.

reply

No you're not the only one the guy who plays Sinisa is sooo hot and cute lol,and all those sex scenes -loved it!

reply

congratulations to the neighbors of croatia on the more than a decent movie!

I loved the photography and direction...emir's acting is hands down fabulous! ... also, the happy melancholy and typical sarcasm were both captured very accurately... the ever so specific humor and character's flaky, impulsive spirits made me feel nostalgic in a good way..

on the other hand, the comedy to tragedy transition was far from perfect, as was the dramatic dynamic between the characters... more attention needed to be paid there...

to point out one more thing.. even though it was subtle, it was a shame to see the finger being pointed in the, so long ago played out, serbian direction...it was unnecessary....but never the less, the effort in whole was very good...it shows that times are changing...and I'm looking forward to more of similar and collaborated production

I was surprised how BAD it was.

The story is fine, but I think it could be much better with better actors.

reply

Good thing that this movie takes part before the Balkan war, but actually tells the story of the Balkan conflict in the storyteller's view.

We see in the end the Serb almost killing the Bosnian, the Croat is secretly doing things against Bosnian, the Bosnian is willing to kill the Serb but fails, the Slovenian guy is the first to throw his helmet and run away from all this that happens. And they find theirselves shooting at "their own" in the end.

I guess that the storyteller made this deliberately, and while we see all of the countries from ex-Yugoslavia take part of the movie, that they, in some way, agree to what has happened.

There is no one to blame. It's the alcohol, drugs, money and women that made the conflict in the movie. And I guess the politicians were this drugs in the real life.

reply

it was a good movie untill ending unfortuntly

reply

Stop with that *beep* that the ending is bad! What did you expect? That they will all live happily after! The ending is good. YOu are laughing all the time and the end just shut you up and make you think!
And by the way, if I hear once more that somebody mixes POLITIKU with art I will slap him or her! Are we still that stupid and blind like 15 years ago?!
That that guy who said ~~Best croatian movie ever~~ is the best example how stupid someone can be.I am not saying that because I am serbian and he is croat, because I do not hate and I do not have prejudies. I would say that to anyone else who thinks like that. If you continue like that you will never see farther from your nose. Think positive! Choose life...........Toliko

I absolutely loathe these srpsko-hrvatske rasprave wherever I go but nevertheless ...

I must say I preferred the way the book ended much more than the way the movie ended. I've seen the interview with Ante Tomic on "Nedeljom u 2" and he said that Grlic wanted the ending to explicitly portray the downfall of former Yu by leaving almost everyone in the movie dead. I must say that the book portrayed that pre-war feeling much better in a more subtle way. Maybe it's because I remember those times very well and he depicted that atmnosphere perfectly ...

However, I understand that the viewers of this movie may not be that subtle and that he needed to put it in their face in order to make them understand. I liked the movie but I still like the book much, much more! Way to go Ante!

Creators of the moviea clearly say that this movie is the "first regional co-production of all countries of ex Yugoslavia" along with some international financies. http://www.karaulafilm.com/production.php

So stop the nonesence about who's the movie is more. Creators clearly try to motivate unity in at least making movies and you all just start acting "balkanian" about it :)

Great comment djlayer! this is indeed a great movie, i found it definetely the best croat movie ever! But i think we're all to blame, especialy the JNA army-culture in which a lot of people had to do something with the army, the society was breething on the army with had a violent impact in the later society.

Great movie though!

Stari, to je klasična koprodukcija... ne pa hrvatski film... To je isto ko da bi mi rekli da je No mans land Slovenski film, ker je Djuro zdaj Slovenac in je Slovenija dala pare in teren za snemanje....

Best Croatian movie ever is 'Tko pjeva zlo ne misli', that is canon. As for Karaula, it is surprisingly good and definitively miles above of standard regional production, not to even bother comparing it to industrial Hollywood crap.

Its one heck of a film, the characters feel real and you feel for them, each in their own way, and what seems simple at first uncovers layer upon layer, that nothing is as simple as it may seem.

The ending... could it have ended differently? If it did, it would not feel the same, if you want a cheap happy ending, watch Angelina and Brad in Mr and Mrs Smith, this is not that kind of movie. In the end you are left with emotions and much food for thought. It could not end any way different.

Is it a Croatian movie? Need we count the euros spent in its production, or examine the blood cells of the cast and crew... its Yugoslavia retold, but it it retold from Croatian perspective.
