Go on admit it: It was boring

Look, I liked the film (6/10) but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be.

I know the movie is not following Hollywood conventions of what a movie should be, and I appreciate that, but couldn't they have told a more INTERESTING story?
Bits of it were interesting but then lots of bits were boring too. I just dont' see why it won so many AFI awards.

Saying that, I do hope to see more 'aboriginal' storytelling on film.

I don't think it was boring at all, I thought it was a lovely story, very human, very heartwarming - and very true. It could have been been set in any time, any place, or any culture. I really enjoyed the moral - that you should be careful what you wish for, because the achievement of your desires always comes with a price. I think it won so many awards because it's such an original concept, and executed so beautifully.

"That, - Captain Bligh, - that is the thing; - I am in hell, sir - I am in hell."

I admit it - I found it quite boring.

In fact if felt like a documentary with an average story to move it along.

reply

fantastic. being a documentary lover this film is on the top of my list.

reply

lol i third it. It was a bit boring... but i WAS expecting some kind of epic masterpiece after all the raving i'd heard.

reply

If you think "10 Canoes" was boring then it proves you are boring in that you can't be entertained by anything simple. It also means you have no interest in other cultures or are so ingrained in your own culture the graphic representation of another is too alein to comprehend.
Go walkabout and get your soul back.

lol i'm australian. After this guys work in bad boy bubby, this just didnt measure up. and why must people resort to insults just because of differing opinions...

reply

Hey Frequency-2 you are so funny.

I have a different opinion to you so you can judge me? Based on me finding a boring film boring you feel the need to suggest that "... means you have no interest in other cultures or are so ingrained in your own culture the graphic representation of another is too alien to comprehend. "

So in the last year or so I saw at the cinema

Foreign Language Films
----------------------
La Science des rêves
Ne le dis à personne
El Laberinto del fauno
Zwartboek

British Films (but not my own culture)
-------------------------------------
London to Brighton
Red Road
This Is England

Can't wait for your highly educated reply.

Hey Joe,

My point was I enjoy a wide variety of movies - the guy just pissssed me off with his suggestion I'm some sort of dumbass for not enjoying the movie.

We all like different things - I found it very boring.

It's a very good film, and it's not the least bit boring! It doesn't drag on(only 90 minutes long), and it's character's are fun to watch. The one thing I liked was the subtle musical score. There's alot to like about this film, if you found it boring then maybe you missed the point of the film.

reply

There's things to like and dislike about all movies really isnt there. and a short film, like a 10 minute film can drag on if it's boring lol. I found it boring but that doesn't mean i missed the point. Maybe i didn't appreciate or respect the way it was portrayed. At the end of the day, some ppl will like it, and some wont. It's unfair to judge ppl on either side when it all just comes down to a matter of opinion.

reply

Not only was it boring but the acting was terrible. Just because the film is unusual doesn't mean it is good, jesus.

reply

I had no preconcieved notions about the film and didn't find it boring at all. I thought the story was really interesting and it kept me entertained.

reply

but it is good :)

I watched the movie last night after having it on my shelf for a month or so. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the movie but I did enjoy it.

It may have taken a long time to tell the story, but as they explained in the film that is how long it takes to tell some traditional stories.

I did watch the extras on the DVD and it was very hard to film as one of the main actors simply walked off the set prior to filming and the old man in the 'current' setting also walked off the set and wasn't seen until towards the end of the movie.

reply

hi, simonkevnorris! really nice to know you liked it! :)
i did watch the extras too - almost unbelievable how they could really finish the movie...! :)
but i am happy they did! :)

reply

boring? ten canoes ?!

maybe its not for you then OP....a 'whoooooosh'?

Its not conceptually perfect, but fantastic is how i would describe it.

I am curious about your comment on Hollywood conventions. You claim that this film does not follow such conventions. I actually found that it did. It followed the traditional three-act Hollywood narrative.

What Hollywood conventions do you consider this film deviated from?
