while I don't think the film is garbage, I think it could have been done a lot better. It finally got an English release on DVD, so I was able to purchase it. The back of the case makes it sound like an edgy trip into madness, full of drugs and sex. However, the actual movie is nothing like that.

It does get interesting near the end, but there wasn't much that happened in this movie that was done all that well. To be fair, Ryuhei Matsuda put in a good performance, and the actor who played Shin put in a decent performance (gotta love his Kiss cowboy hat), but beyond that, I couldn't find much acting that was truly convincing.

Also, I really enjyoed the music in the movie, I found that to be its highest point. I also wondered why so few people were here on this board, but after viewing the film, I can see why. At the end of the day, the film is just ok, and will not go down in history as anything but a mediocre film that should have been much more.

I rented the ADV release this weekend from a local video store and it appeared relatively new there. This is a video store with good country-by-country foreign sections, but it doesn't compare to a particular Asian video store I go to sometimes. I'm sure the latter store might have had a different version of the DVD available earlier, but I wasn't really looking for it. I think more people will get to see it now that the ADV version is out, which purports to be a 2007 English translation. Note: I am not endorsing ADV in any way by saying this-- I'm just pointing out that regular video stores are more likely to carry that version. (Incidentally, I didn't realize that the default setting on this disc would be to English dubbing when I hit 'play' in the menu. It took less than five seconds for my boyfriend and I to make gagging sounds at the awful mismatch and crappy translation, and go back to the menu to choose subtitles-- which in addition to allowing tasteful, natural voices to be heard, carried a much more accurate translation. I still can't believe how bad dubbed action STILL is these days. There are rare exceptions, but this version of the movie's dubbing is definitely not one of them.)

It sounded interesting, but I stopped watching it 20 minutes in. Something about the quality of it was just terrible--it's not like it looked super-low-budget, but the acting and setup was just really stiff and artificial-feeling, like a soap opera. There's basically no introduction--you're just thrust onto the murder scene, with a bunch of stock cop dialogue--and it was all downhill from there and impossible for me to get into. The shots of the lonely girl with synesthesia were just aggravating, trying to get you to feel something the movie really hadn't earned. I figure that's why no one's posting about this movie. That and probably no one's heard about it. I found it on some Japanese drama website.
