Patrick Dempsey to voice Kenai

It's not going to be Jason Marsden, according to animated-news.com:

"Patrick Dempsey to voice Kenai in Brother Bear 2

Whereas the trailer on the Bambi II DVD featured Jason Marsden (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride) in the role, Kenai will be voiced by Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey in Brother Bear 2. The character was voiced by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film. In addition to this news, Ultimate Disney has acquired the sequel's DVD artwork."

Aw man, I just found out a few minutes ago that Jason would be voicing Kenai, now this happens, what a jip.

I prefer Jason Marsden's voice over Doc MacDreamy's voice. Ah well...

Life's a journey. Enjoy the ride.

"I mean if Patrick Dempsey is really voicing Kenai, then why would they have already cast Jason Marsden to voice him eariler in the first place? Is this some kind of a joke they're trying to pull on us?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!"

There is no joke. In the early stages of the movie, they casted him but either negotiations didn't work or they weren't pleased with his performance and looked elsewhere for Kenai's voice. They only announced it now because they didn't want to make anything big out of it until the movie was absolutely done. Make an announcement about a voice casting change in the middle of production and it raises questions of confusion, possible incompetence, and whether this movie was really worth the time and money to produce. And now for Disney, it's a trump card because since Dempsey is big on "Grey's Anatomy", they've got instant promotion they can use. Marsden wouldn't have provided such a trump card.

At the time, with Disney absorbing Pixar, I'm sure they didn't want any attention called to any other areas of their business. It would be more fuel for Disney analysts and presumers to wonder how much Lasseter would improve the company, so as to avoid "mistakes" like these.

"I mean seriously it can't be really hard to get Joaquin Phoenix back right?"

I'm sure it was hard financially, because Phoenix now can demand more money, more than Disney was willing to pay no doubt, especially for a lower-budget animated film.

And since the film should now be nearly locked at this point, it's not only hard, it's now impossible. Patrick Dempsey recorded the voice track, it's been used for Kenai's animation and that's it.

To be fair, I don't think Disney EVER announced that they had cast Jason Marsden in the role. They just quietly released a trailer featuring Marsden, in which we oh-so-clever fans easily recognized his voice. ;)

If anyone can point out a press release or something that proves me wrong, please do so.
