WHY is Wanda Sykes playing a native woman...

I mean, I get it, it's a cartoon, but her voice is just SO jarringly and obviously from the American black culture that it is PAINFULLY wrong for the character she is voicing - an elderly paleo-indian - who looked more Asian than anything (because they came from Asia over the land bridge).

I am someone who has some native blood - so while I know some idiot is bound to go "racist!"...kind of hard to be when you're a mutt like me. I've never even dated a caucasian girl.

Ok, if we're going to be literal about it...NONE Of them should be speaking English - but we don't really know what the language was like 10,000 years ago. So they went with English as the default. But the rest of the characters in the movie have a more neutral accent for the most part - could be from anywhere in the Americas and voiced by any actor born here - I know of plenty of actors who are asian, hispanic, black, etc, who, if you heard their voice, you'd not be able to tell what culture they came from - just that they were BORN here.

Now, with Sykes...she just SO obviously sounds like...well...a black woman...let's face it, she DOES, and pretending she doesnt is just as "racist" as you claim others to be. How many native americans do you know who speak that way? None. That's what I thought.

It's not a HUGE deal. I'm ok with it - I can live with it, whatever - I just think that casting HER was a poor choice. It DOES NOT matter to me if the voice actor is black (I love michael clark duncan...RIP) - but her voice is just SO far off from the look of the character that it is distracting.

Maybe I'm the only one. I just find Sykes annoying and unfunny. Just obnoxious. If they wanted African American voice actors in their movie, they'd have been far better off with someone like Nichelle Nichols. Right age, even, MUCH more pleasant voice.

Have to agree. It's an issue with a black woman voice an Inuit, but not white actors voicing Inuits?

Is it an issues that Tug the bear is voiced by a black man? And the Moose are Canadian?

And heck, the character wasn't around that long anyhow. This is as bad as people hating on Beyonce when she voiced Queen Tara in Epic.

I just watched this today and was also wondering why a sassy black woman was playing an older native woman.
