Hamlet or Macbeth?

It says it's loosely based on Hamlet but I don't remember Hamlet having such a strong female character.

Right, this is a re-worked version of the Shakespeare play largely centered around Ziyi Zhang's character, Empress Wan. Director Feng, while promoting the movie in Cannes, revealed to reporters this is one of main elements which sets The Banquet apart from all the other film versions of "Hamlet" (aside from the Chinese setting, the costumes, the martial arts and so many other lesser details).

As such, it's probably best to think of The Banquet as "Gertrude" rather than "Hamlet".
