Why did those guys in the white masks.

Do a robot dance when they were going to get killed by those guys in heavy steel armour? they pretty much let them kill them.

reply

Just to show the Chinese invented robot moves 10 centuries before Michael Jackson, that's all.

reply

Lol yeah probly and out of all those masked guys only one fights back

The queen is a flat chested minga

reply

The one guy who fought back was probably one of the bodyguard/messengers disguised as the prince.

The rest of the stuff was all stylized story-telling. The prince was slumming in a crappy drama & music workshop. So all these artsy guys were just hanging around to get killed.

reply

What is that place anyway. I guess thats the grand daddy of all emos the guys in the white masks robot dancing and doing funny moves while people with knives chase them

reply

I'm somewhat surprised that nobody has anything more to say about the scene than it was a shame that defenseless people didn't do more to defend themselves.

reply

i think the actors in the mask knew that they were going to die anyway so they martyred themselves to stay true to their art, which was pretty much their life and discipline.

If you guys have seen the movie "Ying Xiong" (Hero starring Jet Li, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, etc) there was a part when the imperial guards came to attack the Calligraphy School where 2 of the heroes were hiding. The Calligraphy Master told his students not to run away and instead continue practising their calligraphy, even though arrows were raining down and all of them died.

The Masked Actors in The Banquet reminded me of that scene in Hero...and I think explains how these people placed their art over their life.

reply

they are idiots!

reply

no no no
they stood around and get kileld because the director told them too

reply

director is absolutely idiot, too. he was not, but now he is. I hope his next film will not be so terrible.

reply

"director is absolutely idiot, too. he was not, but now he is."

Probably not the most flattering review I've read on these boards.

Probably not the most flattering review I've read on these boards.
Nor the most intelligent

reply

These boards are filled with persons who are not merely content
with saying they did not enjoy a movie, but are more interested
in boring the rest of us with their "agenda" of expressing contempt
for a particular director or artist.

reply

Well I agree that the scene was pretty ridiculous with the actors actively trying to get themselves killed instead of freaking a running for their lives like.... actual people would do. As for the white outfits/masks and crazy dancing its actually a very recent style from Japan called "butou." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butoh)

I have no idea why they chose to feature it so prominently in a movie supposedly set in ancient China.... Butou is neither ancient nor Chinese... and does not really fit the feel of this movie at all...

reply

I think they were just trying to protect the prince. they were not trained fighters (except for the very last one), so they could only run, but they tried to distract the assassins so the prince could hide in the water.

reply

yes they were just decoys to distract the killers so the prince can run away.

reply

Bingo! to the last three posters. Honestly, all you have to do is use your head to figure out what was going on. Jeesh.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...
