Does Wu Lan rape Qing?

What do people think? He rips off her clothes, but then she holds him afterwards?

It's a question which the film asks the viewer to ponder. In fact, the movie is full of such open-ended questions for the viewer, and not just the ending, as some might like to believe.

Through this clever use of ambiguity, the film, and the screenplay in particular, captures the spirit of Hamlet, rather than simply following the text of the original play.

You can't rape the willing.

reply

That isn't true -- especially if one has actually watched the film and seen the scene.

The complexity of it is result of the fact that she is in love with him to begin with.

reply

He chases her, she gives in, and then they make love.

haven't you watched asian porn before?
they always act like they don't want it

Huh? What chapter out of The Book of Pee Cee did you pull that one out? Geez!

reply

Judgemental knee-jerk idiot much?

reply

That's your speculation, because that is not what happens in the film.

he hella raped her. she holds him afterwards because for the most part, colonized people love their colonizer. she has no idea what love is, as we can see from her ladeedaa kind of dreamy thinking and her "oh no! he's dead so i shall not eat either!" so basically she thinks that as long as he is happy, he loves her too.

rape during that time was normal and it wasn't called rape because men owned women. it wasn't even until the 60's and 70's that it was called rape if a wife didn't consent to her husband's sexual demands in the u.s.

those were the days huh angrylilasiangrrl

"Colonized"!? Have you seen the film yet?

It's okay to speak with an accent, but not to see with one.

She is exceedingly innocent. And she is in love with him. And the act is rape regardless the times, and regardless whatever else called.

But we don't know if ultimately he does rape her because we don't see anything between his attacking her, and her -- and both are fully clothed -- holding him after whatever happened that we don't see.

As for what she thinks: I doubt you can read the minds of resl people, so it would seem even more difficult to read the minds of imaginary people in a fiction film.

I thought yes but her behaviour afterwards suggested she loved and wanted to be with him - but not like that or at that time - but she seemed to forgive him anyway. It's politically incorrect and complex and confusing and anyway just a film.
