how did they know it was a cross bow

before they had ever seen it
not a big deal but kinda funny

Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get outta here? Talk to me.

It would have to be a crossbow because they have shorter range but better penetrating power than a long bow.

Who the heck in the modern world would use a weapon that fires arrows if it can't be either semi-auto fire or just takes a lot of effort to fire one shot? Using a long bow in a place like that would be impractical unless the SAS guy was from the Middle Ages

Yeah, that makes the most sense as it was bolts he was shooting and not arrows. And England's history has a lot to do with there mastery of long bows over crossbows so if any of them were in a history class it isn't that unbelievable that they'd be able to tell the difference

Crossbow bolts are alot shorter than arrow..

There are some interesting guesses here, but modern compound bows would be indistinguishable from a crossbow simply by looking at speed and accuracy, and modern arrows are also made of metal. Perhaps they saw the guys shooting. Neither bow nor crossbow can be fired effectively for accuracy against a moving target at a great distance. The father back the more guessing has to go into hitting the moving target and to hit them with the speed in the film at the angle shown the shooter couldn't be so far as to need to be using high angle shots.
