Reference to Battle Royalle?

Ok is it just me or the plot summary sounds very alike to Battle Royalle? Not everything obviously, but the main idea.. you know, what do you guys think?

reply

To be honest i think the plot is more near dog soldiers (another sean pertwee movie), than battle royale... Another movie with the same kind of plot would be lord of the flies. But some reference can be found in battle royale (the absolute number one movie ever, is what i think)... And battle royale spells with only one L... just felt like saying that...

I... Can feel... Again... - Kazuo Kiriyama (I´m crying)

I thought it was like Wrong Turn more than anything.

How come every time a movie is made about people getting killed on an island someone always has to say its like Battle Royale? Its equal parts First Blood, Lord of the Flies (though not as much as I was hoping for), and pretty much any teen slasher.

I think they're both part of a sizeable genre. Including much older films such as John Boorman's "Deliverance", Walter Hills "The Last Americans". They all owe a bit to Golding's novel, "Lord of the Flies".

reply

I think you meant Southern Comfort, not the Last Americans.

to be honest, i was pretty skeptical of this film to begin with because it initially resembled a more plastic version of scum, but it's seemingly random change in direction made it open to fresh judgement, despite the "we're being killed off 1 by 1" plot device being quite cliche. all in all i liked it, the development of steve's character was impressivly significant in the plot making him all the more menacing. his ignorant aggression was a jaunting reflection of all too many real life characters in britain which gave him an identifiable edge. the hero character, i forget his name, i thought was abit plastic, though necessary to the plot i suppose.

Yes. There are plenty of situations through out the
film where you feel like you've seen it before, and some scenes are a
complete rip-off. I do recommend Battle Royale before watching this
one. It's a better film.

I don't see any resemblance to Lord of the Flies, except that there's an island.

Lord of the flies: presumably innocent schoolchildren grow up fast having to care for themselves on an island, eventually turn on each other but not due to any lack of safety or resources.

This movie: Guilty as hell near adults who get cared for most of the film, never have to deal with the thought of being stuck on the island forever, don't look for mother/father figure, don't splinter based on survivalism or tribalism, except the 2 bullies who were always the same. Oh and they're being hunted down almost the entire film.
