Just watched it

i kinda felt it was draged out, i expected something similar to bloodlust. i mean a lot more style with lots of (actualy) visible action and less random "slash" cuts. the story seemed to just fall flat...damn. ill have to rewatch this...

reply

the fluidity of the animation is CRAP compare to ninja scroll and bloodlust, lots of jerky movement, looks more like the fist of north star 80s anime series, total dissapointment

reply

Oh well, just cheking, its by US animation studio LOL, bad decision, should give this project to the more pro japanese animator...

reply

The animation was done by Madhouse Studios in Japan, makers of Ninja Scroll. It was also done by the director of ninja scroll and Bloodlust. U guys do'nt know what you`re talking about.

reply

Finished watching the movie like 10 minutes ago.
Loved it and hope they make a sequel. There's plenty more world for Colin to explore and more Immortals for him to meet.
This is the movie they should be thinking for the new trilogy, and not the unfortunately very bad Highlander - The Source.

reply

LOL Same here, I finished watching it about 10 minutes ago after converting it to DVD (So about the time you finished, I began!)

The animation was excellent. Its true, it wasn't as fluid as, say Ninja Scroll, which by comparison, had a much larger budget (for that time). Ninja Scroll was a real, theatrical movie. As far as I can tell, this wasn't released mainstream anywhere, so it had less effort.

Overall, it was really good.

Here's my (fairly crap) review of the movie I did on a forum about 2 mins ago.

"The animation is... fu_cking amazing. I was in awe the whole time.

The story is nice. Its incredibly 80s, which I love, it even has the "annoying kid" who comes along with them, but thankfully, he's only in a few scenes. Its fairly basic, like the other Highlander films, it leaps between past and "present", making the story whole. I enjoyed it, Colin's growth throughout the film is quite interesting too.

The characters are lovely. The female lead really bought me, I totally believed her. She was great. Colin was a bit too "I'm dark and angry, leave me alone" for parts of the film, but he grew. Most of the other characters were fairly plain, they had a role to play, and did well.

The Voice Acting is really good. A lot of veteran VAs are in the film. The only one I had a few problems with was the female lead, she sounded slightly montone at times, her angry voice was the same as her calm voice, only louder, or that's how it seemed sometimes.

The action is *beep* epic. Really great sword and gun battles. Its one of those films where the character's fight whilst the background swirls around them, making it really intense, very Kawajiri.

Really, see this film. It doesn't fail anywhere. Its not a masterpiece in anything but art. As a film, its very good. As an example of animation; its a genius."

And I stand by what I said about animation. Its style was very unique to Kawajiri, and a great example. Very different from, say, Ghibli's work.

I tried sniffing coke once, but the ice cubes got stuck up my nose :(

Just wondering buuut.. was it dubbed or subbed? After Bloodlust I'm half expecting it to be solely a dub. Glad to hear it's pretty good though

reply

Dubbed. And a pretty good dub too.

It was recorded first in English, then in Japanese.

I think a Japanaese dub with subtitles will be available when it comes out to DVD, officially.

Ahh, very cool! Thanks! :)

Not the best Kawajiri I've seen (and I've seen 'em all!). Vampire hunter: Bloodlust and Ninja scroll are far superior.

The scenario is not very good (too American), and the (American too) soundtrack sucks...

so i watched it again. left a better impression this time. still waaay too many flashbacks. this is how it goes for me
bloodlust>highlander>ninja scroll

*spoiler alert*

I gave this movie a 3/10, and here's why:

1. The voice acting left much to be desired, specifically the female lead, the doctor and the kid.

2. Somehow it turns out that the female lead is a "reincarnation" of Moira, how? And she's been praying to God (she's a Christian) for him? And then when she dies she says that they'll meet again, but this is very un-Christian-like.

3. The biggest deus ex machina ever, he kills Marcus and somehow the Quickening selectively takes out ALL the robots and tanks in the streets, AND kills off the air-borne virus. Since when does the quickening do this? I've never seen it do anything similar to this in all the Highlander episodes nor the movies, sure it destroys stuff but not specific things, and not in such a large area (most of Manhattan).

4. I guess we're to assume that every single soldier, tank and robot was put in the streets or housed in the big tower, so that at the end there are none left and all the people from underground are okay. Stretches belief a bit.

5. The druid was the biggest character of convenience ever. He's a "druid spirit" and that's all the explanation we ever get, and he's been following Colin around for over 2000 years. He also has some really good gems like "That has to hurt" and "you did good...NOT".

Overall I was very disappointed and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's light years better than The Source, but I've never seen a worse movie that that, so it's not saying much.

In Finale, when Duncan kills Kalas on the Eiffel Tower, that Quickening acted in a similar fashion. It selected, at some distance mind you, and destroyed Kalas' computer that had all the info that would have outed the Immortals.

reply

Yeah that was pretty convenient. It apparently destroyed all the TV's, VCR's computers and other home electronics in the greater Paris area, just because Duncan's Quickening channelled through the Eiffel tower! Not the best science, but the Quickening is kinda magical and does what it likes. Oh well!

I'm not too excited about seeing this. So was it straight to video? Was it on TV, what?

Will this have any appeal for non-Anime fans?

It sounds like most of the negative things people are saying either deal with the fact that this isn't Japanese enough, or that it's the same as the original Highlander movies (with a corny plot, lots of flashbacks, unexplained stuff, etc.).

As a Highlander fan (except for 2--that doesn't count) I'm still definitely going to check this out.

reply

well u should always watch stuff and make your own opinion. dont let negative feedback deter u from it, every movie has it. especialy on this site lol

Of course my Blockbuster doesn't carry this DVD, I got the strange bewildered look when I asked if they had. I don't have any of those mail services. . .
I saw the trailer on YouTube. Looked like some old 80s anime, whats with the sideburns and mullets???

It's supposed to be too American, it's an American franchise written by an American writer and made for an American audience. I think that makes it a pretty unique and interesting anime. I've found very few attempts at east-meets-west animation to be as high-quality and entertaining as this one.

That being said I think this is the best Highlander film since the original which isn't saying much but still. Very entertaining and lots of action reminiscent of Bloodlust. I can't wait for the director's cut and I hope there'll be a sequel. Colin getting his ass kicked again and again throughout the ages was pretty cool too. There's other similarities to Bloodlust such as the wise cracking but helpful "sidekick".

The only thing missing was Queen music.

The animation was done by Madhouse Studios in Japan

Nope. It was done by Imagi out of Hong Kong. Kawajiri directed it, but otherwise there's no link to Madhouse.

reply

Uh. No. The animation was done by Madhouse. Character designs, backgrounds etc. The sound, music, score, scritp was done by Imagi, as well as financing the whole thing.

reply

Uh, yes. Madhouse had nothing to do with the animation beyond pre-production, which is what they do. Madhouse hasn't actually animated anything in years, as they've settled into a design and marketing role. Sure, character designs were done at Madhouse, as were the mechanical designs, but that's about it.

Imagi is an animation house in Hong Kong. Anything not done by them was dpne by DR Movie, as that's who actually does all of Madhouse's animation. It's why 75% of the names involved in the production were either Chinese or Korean.

reply

Say what you want, but its still better than the last 3 Highlander movies!

reply

Yeah, altough it has the same feel as the highlander movies, this one is definetly better than the ones after the first movie. Besides, the plot may be weak, but it totally focuses on vengeance. I rate it 7/10 Because, it is quite good, very enjoyable for a highlander fan ! :)

reply

Terrible compared to Kawajiri's past works. I need to watch Ninja Scroll over soon to erase Highlander from my eyes. ='(

reply

I just watched it and I enjoyed it. Sure it may not compare to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust nor to Ninja Scroll (I have got to see that movie), but it is one of the best Highlander films ever and is at least second compared to the very first movie. All the other movies (i.e. sequels to the first movie) are just plain rubbish.
