Forty reasons for gun control

A movie that was filled with crap, anti-gun propaganda seemed like a good place for this. It's really a shame because the movie was good. Not exactly Oscar material, but it's great as a cheesy, deliberately over the top action movie that you watch if you want to get a rush. So it's a big shame the movie had to be brought down by its bull$hit anti-gun message.

1. Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, & Chicago cops need guns.

2. Washington DC's low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis' high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control.

3. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are "just statistics."

4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.

5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.

6. The more helpless you are the safer you are from criminals.

7. An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

8. A woman raped and strangled is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.

9. When confronted by violent criminals, you should "put up no defense -- give them what they want, or run" (Handgun Control Inc. Chairman Pete Shields, Guns Don't Die - People Do, 1981, p.125).

10. The New England Journal of Medicine is filled with expert advice about guns; just like Guns & Ammo has some excellent treatises on heart surgery.

11. One should consult an automotive engineer for safer seatbelts, a civil engineer for a better bridge, a surgeon for internal medicine, a computer programmer for hard drive problems, and Sarah Brady for firearms expertise.

12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917.

13. The National Guard, federally funded, with bases on federal land, using federally-owned weapons, vehicles, buildings and uniforms, punishing trespassers under federal law, is a "state" militia.

14. These phrases: "right of the people peaceably to assemble," "right of the people to be secure in their homes," "enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people," and "The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people" all refer to individuals, but "the right of the people to keep and bear arm" refers to the state.

15. "The Constitution is strong and will never change." But we should ban and seize all guns thereby violating the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Amendments to that Constitution.

16. Rifles and handguns aren't necessary to national defense! Of course, the army has hundreds of thousands of them.

17. Private citizens shouldn't have handguns, because they aren't "military weapons", but private citizens shouldn't have "assault rifles", because they are military weapons.

18. In spite of waiting periods, background checks, finger printing, government forms, etc., guns today are too readily available, which is responsible for recent school shootings. In the 1940's, 1950's and1960's, anyone could buy guns at hardware stores, army surplus stores, gas stations, variety stores, Sears mail order, no waiting, no background check, no fingerprints, no government forms and there were no school shootings.

19. The NRA's attempt to run a "don't touch" campaign about kids handling guns is propaganda, but the anti-gun lobby's attempt to run a "don't touch" campaign is responsible social activity.

20. Guns are so complex that special training is necessary to use them properly, and so simple to use that they make murder easy.

21. A handgun, with up to 4 controls, is far too complex for the typical adult to learn to use, as opposed to an automobile that only has 20.

22. Women are just as intelligent and capable as men but a woman with a gun is "an accident waiting to happen" and gun makers' advertisements aimed at women are "preying on their fears."

23. Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering butchers but revert to normal when the weapon is removed.

24. Guns cause violence, which is why there are so many mass killings at gun shows.

25. A majority of the population supports gun control, just like a majority of the population supported owning slaves.

26. Any self-loading small arm can legitimately be considered to be a "weapon of mass destruction" or an "assault weapon."

27. Most people can't be trusted, so we should have laws against guns, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

28. The right of Internet pornographers to exist cannot be questioned because it is constitutionally protected by the Bill of Rights, but the use of handguns for self defense is not really protected by the Bill of Rights.

29. Free speech entitles one to own newspapers, transmitters, computers, and typewriters, but self-defense only justifies bare hands.

30. The ACLU is good because it uncompromisingly defends certain parts of the Constitution, and the NRA is bad, because it defends other parts of the Constitution.

31. Charlton Heston, a movie actor as president of the NRA is a cheap lunatic who should be ignored, but Michael Douglas, a movie actor as a representative of Handgun Control, Inc. is an ambassador for peace who is entitled to an audience at the UN arms control summit.

32. Police operate with backup within groups, which is why they need larger capacity pistol magazines than do "civilians" who must face criminals alone and therefore need less ammunition.

33. We should ban "Saturday Night Specials" and other inexpensive guns because it's not fair that poor people have access to guns too.

34. Police officers have some special Jedi-like mastery over hand guns that private citizens can never hope to obtain.

35. Private citizens don't need a gun for self-protection because the police are there to protect them even though the Supreme Court says the police are not responsible for their protection.

36. Citizens don't need to carry a gun for personal protection but police chiefs, who are desk-bound administrators who work in a building filled with cops, need a gun.

37. "Assault weapons" have no purpose other than to kill large numbers of people. The police need assault weapons. You do not.

38. When Microsoft pressures its distributors to give Microsoft preferential promotion, that's bad; but when the Federal government pressures cities to buy guns only from Smith & Wesson, that's good.

39. Trigger locks do not interfere with the ability to use a gun for defensive purposes, which is why you see police officers with one on their duty weapon.

40. Handgun Control, Inc. says they want to "keep guns out of the wrong hands." Guess what? You have the wrong hands.

That's going to be a looooooong dream. In the meantime, I'll use a seatbelt in the car, keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, and a pistol by the bed. And all for the same reason.

Others, however, will call me the world's sexiest killing machine, who's fun at parties.

"I dream of the day where firearms and weapons of mass destruction will all be nonexistant and everyone can just settle their problems with the weapons they were born with--Fists."

Yeah, you can dream of that, and that's all it ever will be, a dream. There will always be bad people in this world, and they will always be willing to fight dirty, and as long as they exist, good people need the means to defend themselves as well, or they're just at the mercy of the bad.

Yeah you're right therefor everyone should escalate the violence by getting bigger and better guns than the other guy has, because it's been working so well so far. Gun control works REALLY well in most countries. We have like 50 times less murders per capita than you and we have gun control. Sure that's not the only reason we have less crime though but here we don't defend ourselves with guns and regular thieves and robbers don't feel the need to use guns for their crimes, in the end less people die.

It's obviously way to late for the USA though. It's already gotten out of hand so enforcing gun control now probably wouldn't help at all because of all the guns already circulating. However it doesn't take an intelligent man to see where an arms race against eachother will lead you in the end. Unless you don't know, it will lead you straight down *beep* creek valley and chaos eventually. I don't care if you self destruct though. Just come to terms with that you are your own worst enemy. No one kills more americans than americans nowadays afterall.

Yeah, it worked for Hitler. The Jews would have been such a nuisance if they had a way of fighting back. Most of the gun violence in the U.S. is gang-related.
We have like 50 times less murders per capita than you and we have gun control.

What country do you live in? You neglected to mention it somehow. The UK? Roughly four times less, and again, ours is usually gang on gang. We don't mourn those killings, either.

Gun deaths broken down:
Suicide: 60%
Gang Violence: 29.6%
Accidental: 3%
Other: 7.4%

"I dream of the day where firearms and weapons of mass destruction will all be nonexistant and everyone can just settle their problems with the weapons they were born with--Fists."

Yes..that makes perfect sense. Why shouldn't my 18 year old daughter be able to kick the cr@p out of a 250 pound man bent on rape or murder? I know, grandma can just go rent some Kung Fu movies and beat up a whole gang.

It is retards like you who say things like, "If there were no guns, then there would be no war and no crime." Yep, we all know that neither existed before the gun was invented. After we ban all the guns and weapons of war, we can just have you and your buddies go around and remove all the rocks and sticks in the world. You can perfect the foam kitchen knife and create cars that weigh two pounds and go only 1 mph. Hey, we gotta keep the world safe.

As for the sword guy...I collect battle ready swords and I have seen what they can do to a side of beef. If you think that dying by a sword is more humane and honorable, you need to remove your head from your fecal factory. If it comes down to it, just shoot me...PLEASE!

After 7.5 years of law enforcement work I must absolutely agree with those who feel that it is not the weapon that kills, but a ruthless heart. I have seen people killed by all kinds of weapons and I can assure you that someone who wants to harm another will find the means some way. I find it hard to go tell a 115 pound woman who is afraid and living alone that her best option is to learn how to settle her problems with gangs, meth-heads, rapists and murders by doing the honorable thing and just using her fists.

reply

First of all, this film is *beep* second of all, guns work way too easy. "any bloody fool can pull a trigger"

if the good guys can get guns easy, then every bad guy under the sun can get them easier.

I knew one girl with a gun, she got jumped, it fell out of her handbag, and she was shot with it. five more murders occured with that gun before the guy was caught... yeah, guns are REAL safe.

reply

Well, that girl was obviously an idiot. Weapon retention is "Guns-101."

Thanks for the input, rape came to mind as soon as I read that guy's post about how people should settle things with their fists (As if the world was that simple). There are people who need an equalizer.

reply

we need guns to protect us from other people with gund and to shot those goddamm commies

It's like killing roaches - you have to kill 'em all, otherwise what's the use?

reply

Yes, because the world would be a more lovely place if ruled by boxers. Sounds like a tyranny of the young and strong actually.

MOST people solve MOST problems with words and reason, saving force for those that give them no other option. In that scenario, the attacker does not deserve a fair fight or a sporting chance at victory.

The victim does not deserve to be beaten, perhaps to death, just because the attacker is a better fighter or attacks in a gang.

reply

"I hate guns, but love Shoot 'em Up. Give me a sword any day over a gun."

And if I was a criminal that's exactly the mentality I'd want more people to have. I'd want more people to prefer swords while I keep my gun, so they'd be much easier to rob, rape, or kill.

I'd rather have gun than a sword because I prefer to actually stand a chance against a criminal. Also, if I'm going to be killed, I'd prefer not to look like an idiot when I do.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Oh, and starvation, we might all starve."

reply

Never bring a knife to a sword fight.

But if you want, you can bring your sword to my gun fight, if you want to use it to take my gun away. I'm sure nobody walking away from it will ask any questions.

I live in Sweden and over here we don't care about guns and I still feel free and safe. But of course, our country isn't as *beep* up with crime as your country.

The only ones that cares about guns in Sweden are hunters and soldiers. My dad happens to be a hunter. He has two double-barreled shotguns, two snipers and one combo-rifle. So we do actually have guns. But I would feel just as safe without them.

All these posts of the pro private gun ownership have made me wonder how all the countries in Europe who don't allow this, have fared so well all these years?!

"All these posts of the pro private gun ownership have made me wonder how all the countries in Europe who don't allow this, have fared so well all these years?!"

Ah, yes, the "other countries" argument. That does sound perfectly valid until you look at the different areas of the US. The places with the strictest gun laws always seem to have the highest violent crime rates.

reply

This is not safety. I have a armoured entrance door, double glass windows and strong shutters: my home is a safe place, so I don't need to keep a gun by my bedside. Most of the people I know live like this and hasn't ever been robbed, just like me.

I had a discussion with an American friend: he told me he won't install an armoured door because it's "expensive" but he's ready to shoot someone if he has to protect his family. Coz, you know, better to shoot another person than spending some money on your house. Different mentalities indeed.

But I have love in my heart - Yes, as a thief has riches, a usurer money

Considering recidivism rates and how screwed up the legal and prison systems are... yes, many times, it IS much better to shoot a criminal. Not necessarily kill him, but take him out of the crime game so he can't victimize anyone else.

It isn't just about protecting ME. More guns = less crime for everyone, and the stats prove it, since violent crime in the US has dropped 50% in 20 years, as more citizens have armed themselves.

Meh. The whole "Gun control" part was some rehashed skeleton plot they used to give 'em all a reason to shoot themselves up. That way they have the main dude without his own gun, and having to get 'em from the "bad guys".

They could've used "TOBACCO BAN" or "LEGALIZE MARIJUANA" and they would've still managed to pull off an over-the-top action movie!

reply

Damn good bit of humor there. Takes the gun control fanatics' twisted logic and puts it right where the sun doesn't shine. Really hit the nail on the head.

What really irked me is that while Clive Owen's character is spouting on about the neccesity of gun control, he takes time from his mayhem-making to spank a woman who is disciplining her child for doing something wrong, thus thwarting the most basic form of future crime prevention. Like, this kid, if allowed to run amok because his mom had the fear of disciplining him put in her by some foreigner with a weird United Nations Children's Rights perspective, will eventually grow up to become a model citizen who won't carve up someone who pisses him off, and won't rob grocery and liquor stores for a living. But if all guns are banned, then he can in fact make a fortune robbing these places because the owners won't have any way to protect themselves from a machete-wielding punk who didn't get spanked because his mom was afraid that if she did, some foreign nutjob might give her another humiliating spanking. Boy, don't you love films that work outside the realm of common sense?

After I saw that scene I put Clive Owen down on my list of liberal acting and directing wussies who will make and/or star in movies with very dubious ethical themes as long as the pay is good. He's right there along with George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, and Brad Pitt.

And here's a couple of interesting factoids about some massacres with high body and injury counts that did not involve guns:

"June 8, 2001 ~ Ikeda, Osaka, Japan
8 dead, 15 injured ~ Osaka school massacre. Armed with a kitchen knife, a 37-year-old former janitor Mamoru Takuma trespassed into Ikeda Elementary School attached to Osaka-Kyoiku University and stabbed school children and teachers. Eight children were killed and 15 wounded, among those were 13 children and two teachers."

"November 26, 2004 ~ Ruzhou, Henan, China
8 dead, 4 injured ~ Yan Yanming, 21, an intruder stabbed eight students to death and injured four others at Ruzhou's Number Two High School in the sixth such incident in China in a four month period. The attacker attempted to take his own life after the killings."

There are plenty of similar items at:

http://copycateffect.blogspot.com/2008/02/asian-school-stabbings.html

And the one item which involved guns points out that these were home-made weapons utilizing firecracker gunpowder. But take comfort in the fact that in Brooklyn, NY, Mayor Bloomberg and the police are trying to force a man to register a functioning replica of a flintlock rifle as a handgun which the gent uses when he participates in Revolutionary War recreations in various parts of the United States. Heaven forbid that this fellow should conceal a gun almost six feet long under his coat to corner someone in an alley while he spends a minute getting this weapon powdered, ball inserted, tamped, and primed for a stick-up.

Yes, only a small minority see and can identify the absolutely absurd logic of gun control, and oppose useless, feel good, gun laws that create the illusion of security while in reality helping criminals.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Oh, and starvation, we might all starve."

reply

Yeah.. of IMDB posters. Most of America understands the concept of life and liberty and the right of the individual to protect themselves, their family and their property and freedom. I don't own a gun, but I fully respect those who do and reject those who wish to limit the freedoms of all for the greater good of the few.

reply

"Please don't judge all Americans by his post. I assure you that he's a small minority."

52 Million housholds with an estimated 260 million guns. Hardly a minority. I just love how your type loves to lump all gun owners into the same "wacko gun nut" group. My gun has killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car thank you very much.

reply

Being a devout supporter of the Second Amendment, I suppose *could* post rebuttals to each of the anti-gunners that have blessed this thread with their 'pearls of wisdom,' but it would be little more than an excercise in redundancy.

With that being said, I tip my hat to Scotty7617, intrepidjournalist, Spudley112,m bindimax, DoctorStrangelove, juslen, and Newz Dawg.

In closing, to those of you who oppose private ownership of firearms, and/or the very existence of firearms, I would ask that you think long and hard about what would happen if you had your way; what the elimination of firearms would lead to.

reply

lol, take a look at the polls, they tell a decidedly different story from yours. The problem with you and your ilk is that all your doom and gloom stories about things like concealed carry never came to pass. There was no "blood running in the streets" as you had surely hoped and prayed for.

You. Were. Wrong. And more Americans wise up to this fact every day.
