Crank or Shoot 'em up

both got 7.1/10 on IMDB

So to those who have seen both, whats better i have posted this on both films pages to make sure its not just a one sided affair!

i personally liked crank more, it was equally cheesey and at times a little bit worse, but there were more moments i laughed at and it had less or possibly no horrible one liners.

crank had a better storyline opportunity that was not executed as well as it could have been. both films used some interesting camera work but crank to me wins on the editing, the snip shots and general weirdness

shoot em up was a very artsy and almost gun version of a oriental martial arts film with all the over the top kicks and punches. but had a incrediblly stupid (though i guess more original) story again poorly executed and too many rubbish jokes.

for me... Crack wins 6/10
shoot em up 4/10

As much as I like Jason Statham movies, I have to go with:

Crank: 6/10
Shoot 'Em Up: 8/10

CRANK
Hands down. It's one of my favorite action movies. Pure fun.
I didn't care as much for Shoot 'Em Up... I appreciated what they tried to do, but I didn't find it that funny...

The moment Clive Owen shoved a carrot through a man's head and saying "Eat your vegetables", I fell in love with this movie. The one-liners make it a much better film than Crank.

reply

both this and crank are PROPER mens movies hahaha

Crank wins for me though purely for .. "JUICE ME"

*beep* wibbly *beep* wibbly wobbly, jelly on a *beep* plate, wibble *beep* wobble!

reply

I have to say Crank as well. Crank just goes directly to MAXIMUM suspense and stays there throughout the entire movie
Shoot 'Em Up has awesome, exagerated and funny gun fighting scenes, but doesn't quite reach the same level as Crank
Crank 10/10
Shoot 'Em Up 8/10

Crank Is actully Funny
Crank Is Exhilarating to watch
Crank has Cool characters
Crank Cranks it Up to the limit

Shoot Em Up tries far too hard
Shoot Em Up is very silly most of the time
Shoot Em Up has lines even James Bond wouldn't say
Shoot Em Up leaves you feeling unsatisfied

GAME OVER

Odd. Or, maybe it was "coincidence"

My son sent me both of these movies as a gift. He picked them out for the quality one wanted most: to sit back, enjoy and not take either one of them very seriously. I watch both of these together from time to time just to relax and enjoy. I go through my "Bourne" trilogy, or the "Underworld" trilogy, or the "Resident Evil" series in the same manner - just to enjoy. "Crank" and "Shoot em up" are pure fun.

I am 70 years old btw.

reply

Gotta be CRANK for me :)

reply

Crank is like playing GTA
Shoot em up is like playing Max Payne

I like Max Payne more

reply

Hahaha, that's a fantastic way of putting it... I totally agree. Although I definitely prefer GTA ;) And thus Crank!

Shame that imdb doesn't support polls for this kind of things

reply

I like Crank better. It was more interesting.

Stuff like this reminds me of "Movie Poop Shoot.com" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

reply

Shoot Em Up was just the epitome of awesomeness. The one-liners were brilliant - "eat your vegetables", "talk about shootin your load!", etc - loved 'em. I know it's over the top and cheesy - Smith can shoot/kill 20 people on a staircase in seconds, except the main bad guy who ducks behind the very thin, wooden banisters.

jason stratham is one of my favorite actors, but shoot em up entertained me more

SHOOT 'EM UP, without a doubt. It's basically a spoofy homage to John Woo's HARD-BOILED, and if you're seen that, you'll get the whacked-out nasty-as-hell craziness of SHOOT 'EM UP, which I liked better than CRANK( even though I saw CRANK when first came out at the movies). However, I like Clive Owen and it was cool to finally hear him speak with his natural British accent in an American film for a change,as well as playing an action anti-hero for once! Plus the stunts and action (right out of a HK action flick) were WAY better than CRANK, so I'd definitely go with SEU!

shoot'em up

You've changed things...forever. See to them your just a freak...LIKE ME...

Somehow Crank felt cruel to me while Shoot 'Em Up did not. It's surprising because both movies involved massive body counts. I guess I liked Clive Owen's character because he seemed to actually care about people and didn't kill anyone, innocent or otherwise.

And besides, the Chinese mob coming in out of nowhere on the rooftop was pure 'tardedness.

reply

LOL! Exactly the question I was asking just after the film had finished. Hmm, I don't quite know yet as I'd have to watch Crank to remind me of its awesomeness.

This was insane too but it's a bit too misogynistic in places for my taste, there's no need for every set piece to end in a groaner, and there's no way around it - it's an anti-gun film about how cool guns are! Still lots of great ideas though.

"When the chips are down, these civilised people will eat each other."

reply

Crank by a mile, more kinetic, better editing and has an interesting central idea taken way beyond the point where it's sane or proper. 7/10

Shoot 'em up - I didn't like the tired one liners, acting was flat, the 'cartoon' analogies were just plain odd, had a misogynistic sex/death tone and replaced genuine thrills with loud music. I just wasn't engaged at any point and would have had more fun playing a shoot em up.

Watch 'Hard boiled' instead, thats a proper guns and babies film and the inspiration for this effort.
3/10

Crank! statham maybe not be marlon brando but clive owen is not an action hero. in fact pretty wooden in general so was really not good watching Shoot em up! :(

reply

I think Crank had the better concept, but I loved both movies. If I had to choose one, it'd probably be Crank, but only just.

reply

Both insanely ridiculously but also insanely entertaining action movies.

Personally I'd pick Shoot 'em Up. But only just.
