I *beep* LOVED this movie.

reply

I 100% agree, WarrenG! Honestly I thought I'd hate a movie like this and can totally understand somebody that does hate it, but I loved it (maybe the alcohol helped............ it always helps)! It's so stupid, but doesn't attempt to take itself seriously and so jammed packed with gunfights that you just laugh at the ridiculousness of it all and enjoy the action! You'll never laugh at one of the "clever" one-liners but some scenes with no dialogue at all will make you chuckle.

Only way to watch this movie is on blu-ray with a good entertainment system while ignoring the story (makes no sense and if you were to say it makes a political statement it would be..... anti-gun?????????????), so if you can't do that I'd ignore unless you're a die-hard action fan (and are use to bad stories).

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. - The Dude

Best movie ever made.

It's wonderful.

Let's hear it for broad generalizations!!! :)

We actually get that it was supposed to be a homage to 80s action movies but the thing is it was just bad. Although for some reason I did like Planet Terror.

Always remember actions speak louder than empty words

reply

An homage to 80s action movies?

AHAHHAHAHA SHOOT EM UP? AN HOMAGE TO 80S ACTION MOVIES? AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OMG LOLOLOLOL REALLY? That's what you got from shoot em up? A throw back to 80s american action?

Wow you really did miss the point of this movie didn't you?

reply

Hey smartass listen to some of the interviews with the director or should I have said home age to over the top action movies instead of specifying it to 80s era of action films. Or do you think the point was to make fun of them when really it was just a *beep* movie with horrible directed action sequences and one liners that really shouldn't even be called one liners.

Always remember actions speak louder than empty words

LOLLOLOLOL

hard to enjoy a movie that is predictable and dull

reply

An "homage to over the top action movies" that is entirely lacking in explosions? Are you sure you're thinking of the same movie?

I like Shoot 'Em Up a lot better than PT, because it simply has much more wit I thought.

"...there is no point!

There has to be a point... And what is the point in making another tired and unoriginal "one man army against hordes and hordes of gunstrapping enemies"? This has been done to death. One man has to protect someone, he's up against a high ranked criminal who has a personal army at his disposal. Toss in a corrupted politician, explosions and witty one liners and voila - you have the same garbage we've seen for ages. Do people still want this?

I agree that this shows some pretty clever killing methods, but then again they aren't really that clever at all, seeing as they wouldn't work. The bullets between his fingers would probably destroy his hand, the one where he rams head on into the suv and easily flies into the other car would most likely kill him and the gun traps in the factory? Well let's just say that he was very lucky that the bad guys had appearantly never operated guns before... Seriously what is it with these action flicks where the bad men - who aren't important for the plot - can't aim and fire a pistol? Yes, precision shooting is tough, but shooting a man from 6 feet away is just as easy as it sounds.

The movie has gotten an amazingly high score, considering that the movie is outdated and stupid. The only thing keeping this movie from being a horrible embarrasment is Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and that some of the main characters execution methods are pretty funny. The whole "this movie is SUPPOSED to suck" is just not a valid argument.

And oh dear Clive Owen. You have the potential to be one of the all time greats, but the difference in the long run comes down to what roles you pick.

I am obviously missing the point

Last movie seen:- Shoot em up

reply

I didn't like it. That isn't because I didn't understand what it was about. Planet Terror was made with the same intentions. But that was actually entertaining. Shoot Em Up has stiff gags and ugly shooting sequences. It's dumb in a bad way. The way Machete was dumb. Just... unpleasant dumbness that's more punishment than fun.

Machete was in Planet Terror. And where it should have stayed.

sock_dk, you are absolutely right and I am so pleased that you said it. Lack of originality is the problem with most movies regardless of the genre. I agree that the whole "the point is that their is no point" argument is completely dimwitted idea. Apparently the studio that forked over the millions to make this movie, as well as the dozens of others out there like it, had a point in mind. Their point was to make money, something they knew they could do because of all the folks with incredibly low expectations for their movies. It is this mentality that has allowed trash like The Transformers series to thrive. Let me tell you, the original 1985 cartoon Transformers movie was infinitely better than any of the lame live action versions of today.

I love action movies as much as every other genre (save perhaps musicals), but I require some real intelligence behind my choices. A great cast does not make a great movie, which is proven time and again by most ensemble pieces. A great movie is a combination of great writing, editing, cinematography, set design, costume design, music, overall direction, AND acting. There are lots of people who seem to think that if you do not like something, that means that you didn't get it. Let me tell you something: It is quite possible to get something and still realize it sucks.

I love movies, even some action comedies. Remember the Lethal Weapon series? They were classy and offered their audience everything a movie should. They were fun, funny, and smart. Shoot 'Em Up sucked, just like Boondock Saints 2 sucked. And since everyone is comparing this movie to Planet Terror, let me break it to you really slowly: That movie sucked too! Not all action movies have to be ingenious, but they should have a point beyond making money for their studio executives. Perhaps if everyone just stopped going to see these terrible acts of tasteless redundance, the fools in Hollywood would finally stop making them. I know, I know, dare to dream...

reply

Come on, Planet terror was amazing fun! It had no intentions of being intellectual. It was just good fun.

Well, my experience in the Cinema was thusly :

My gf and me went in expecting an action movie as advertised. The birthing scene happened and we were like "wut"?
It took us a while to get it.
It took everyone in the cinema a while to get it.
Each new shoot out was more outlandish and more stupid than the one before and slowly but surely more and more people were laughing. By the time the skydive occurred (and it's hilarious aftermath) everyone in the cinema was laughing. The penny dropped. We had just been hit by awesome and didn't know it. Everyone left feeling great.

Could it have been done better? Sure. Advertised better? For sure! Did it do it's job, no worries there. It's a comedy.

But like all comedies. It's only good if you found it funny.

Evidently, yes.
Hey, not everyone can be as cultured and superior as you dude - don't empty headed and unsophisticated plebs like us deserve entertainment too?

"I agree that this shows some pretty clever killing methods, but then again they aren't really that clever at all, seeing as they wouldn't work."

We know.

"The bullets between his fingers would probably destroy his hand ... "

We know.

" ... the one where he rams head on into the suv and easily flies into the other car would most likely kill him ... "

We know.

" ... and the gun traps in the factory? Well let's just say that he was very lucky that the bad guys had appearantly never operated guns before..."

We know. I'm guessing the director / actors / crew knew too.

"Seriously what is it with these action flicks where the bad men - who aren't important for the plot - can't aim and fire a pistol?"

"What is it?" Necessary for the (deliberately) dumb plot(s) is what it is - and we like them anyway.

"Yes, precision shooting is tough, but shooting a man from 6 feet away is just as easy as it sounds."

...and realistic movies are not always the most entertaining.

"The movie has gotten an amazingly high score, considering that the movie is outdated and stupid. The only thing keeping this movie from being a horrible embarrasment is Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and that some of the main characters execution methods are pretty funny."

... and perhaps the fact that more people like it than dislike it?
It was made to make money by entertaining gun happy morons like me and it succeeded. WTF is supposed to be so embarrassing about that?

"The whole "this movie is SUPPOSED to suck" is just not a valid argument."

Why? It reached the audience it was made for, entertained them in the way it was supposed to and made back the money the studio wanted. It all seems pretty valid to me.

"And oh dear Clive Owen. You have the potential to be one of the all time greats, but the difference in the long run comes down to what roles you pick."

He's already great. He was great before this movie, during this movie and remains great long after it's over and done with. His greatness is not dependent on pleasing the whiners, just on continuing to do what he does.

Good Grief!
So many people here seem to take this so seriously!
I have never even heard of this movie. I happened to catch the last hour of it last night while channel surfing and I couldn't help laughing! I stuck with it to the end. I plan to rent it just to see it from the very beginning.
It may not be some great masterpiece, but as you say, it's "Just good fun!"
Is there a problem with that? From what I see here, the problem is with the numb nuts who think they are above it all!
Can't simply watch something and find it strangly interesting and absurd?
Some people just have no sense of fun!

Fasten your seatbelts.... It's going to be a bumpy night!

Looney Tunes + John Woo = Shoot 'em up

I will never understand anyone who doesn't appreciate the absurdity of that combination and love this move for that reason alone.

I wouldn't consider this movie an "action comedy". This movie is "action slapstick". A living cartoon where the same rules apply. The only other movie to really even attempt this was Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, and even that movie took the cartoon aspect a bit too literally. The Crank films also tried something similar but were marred by their insistence on attempts to be edgy which more often than not just ended up seeming juvenile.

Shoot 'em up strikes the perfect balance of absurdity and genuine action. It's pure entertainment.

Yes, I get it, yet the movie is boring as hell.
Plus it wasn't funny at all.

I kept watching it for Monica Bellucci.

But in the end it's just retarded situations with retarded characters doing retarded *beep*
