Well that's certainly part of it, missing her own youth. That would explain why she put on the Siouxsie makeup at Barbara's apartment when she went a bit mad, like in the photo she shows earlier of her in the 80s. I'm sure, though, that there are a great number of reasons.

I think she was attracted/infatuated with him. Simple as that. It wasn't the act of cheating that she wanted...it was the person.

Although he was young in age AND appearance (some teen guys look older), I don't consider her a pedofile. Had he been eight or nine that would have been a different story, lol. I am 35 and as much as I cringe to admit it I have seen young men that I am attrated to. I don't think they have ever been as young as this boy, but I met a nineteen year old guy once that I was very attracted to. I even felt young when I was around him, and at times, was like some school aged girl with a crush, lol. Just because we get older doesn't mean we're dead inside. If a guy is attractive, age is usually irrelevant. (for me personally, I do draw the line at 18 though...I feel creepy being attracted to anyone younger, but that just me).

Also, there is not always some deep seeded reason why people cheat. Sometimes there are people in our lives that we meet that we are just attracted to, and it can be a powerful thing. Does that make it right? No, but it happens. And sometimes people offer us things that the ones we love (as much as we love them) do not. Again, it still doesn't make it right, but it happens.

I do not believe the answer is "because she is a pedophile."


No matter how you spin it. No matter what psychological implications of marrying young had on her. No matter what her past was like, she is still an intelligent and thinking adult who under no circumstances should engage in sexual activity with a minor student. At the end of the day she is a pedophile and honestly I think had this movie been about a man who slept with a female student no one would even analyze any "issues" he had in his past. He would simply be considered a perv.

She may have missed her youth or a myriad of other things but she learned the different between right and wrong. You don't reclaim your youth by having sex with a 15 year old student. You reclaim your youth by getting plastic surgery, dressing like your 20 and if you must give into the temptation of an affair at least sleep with someone in college who is of legal age to consent to intercourse with a woman her age.

I don't know what goes on in these teacher's heads, but my thoughts would be these:

1 - Sheba herself was seduced by her teacher when she was 20, now her husband. To her, it was...not NORMAL...but not totally crazy too.

2 - Sheba, when explaining things to Barb, said that she didn't know why. The affair started harmless, with the kid stopping by to work on school stuff for a long time before things happened. She just began to grow attached to him.

This is why people say, and I believe, that guys and girls can't be just friends when they are attracted to each other. At least not the type of friends that you can go and go things with on a frequent basis. Spending so much time with someone just opens the door for things to happen and feelings to grow.

I think that she felt entitled because of her lot in life. She says in the film "minding the gap, what life really is compared to what you wish it was." That was the most significant thing that Sheeba said in the entire film. She was beautiful, extremely! and her mother rejected her and her father died. She wasn't exceptionally intelligent though quite creative. If anything I felt she took others opinions of her or her actions too seriously. She let others make decisions for her and that was her greatest weakness.

With regard to the affair, she was very insecure teaching at a new school. She wanted to work hard and agreed to tutor the boy. She was lonely in a strange way though she was surrounded by love. Maybe she was lacking passion for her husband and itching for something novel. Like I said, she was swept by the wind. When the boy pursued her, her natural instinct was to say no, but she gave in almost immediately to satisfy herself.

So her answer to the husband should have been " I acted recklessly because I felt lonely and I was attracted to him. It was wrong and I am sorry." That would have been the truth. Yet she resented her husband Richard on some level because she blames him indirectly. She refers to their affair. She knows very well that she settled with him and probably could have found a more young attractive and successful man. He seemed decent, but Sheeba was gorgeous.

He takes her back in the end, so the affair maybe made the relationship more honest. It could have been one of those situations that made the marriage stronger. Of course it hurt the kids and for that it was a disaster.
