Did we really need to see Cate Blanchett on the toilet?

But better her than Judi Dench, I guess.

Could have done without seeing Barbara in the bathtub too, even though it was thankfully discreet.

I am really not a prude, but on this occasion I have to agree. Why have this scene? Every time I watch this I try to figure out the meaning behind it. It did give her a moment to begin discovering the gold stars, but she could have come across them by any means. Is it in the book perhaps?

I've been trying to work that scene out myself.
First off, I personally loved the scene, there was something strangely arousing about it.
As for the meaning: They need to show the gold star under her feet. Where else would she discover it? While clipping her toenails?
Could it be that it represents her disgrace? Her ruined authority? That the gold stars she handed out like some Godess handing out life itself, was now nothing more than dirt under her feet? That she had trampled on her own dignity?

reply

Why? that scene was actually necessary.

reply

Nope. Totally unnecessary scene. I actually get the point of Dame Judy in the tub, but not the toilet scene. Kind of pissed me off actually because for some reason this director had to throw in a fifteen second stupid scene in a near-perfect movie.

reply

Do you really hate it THAT much? I mean c'mon, we all pee.

reply

I'm sure some guys with a thing for her didn't mind the scene Besides, I agree. Bodily functions don't bother me enough in movies to worry about it.

But she did a poo as it showed her wiping afterward. Totally grossed me out.

reply

Are you a guy? Just so you know, women wipe after they pee. They can't just 'shake it off', so to speak.

reply

A woman not wiping after she pees means potential piss on her undies

reply

Strange reaction.

The toilet scene did have a purpose for her characterization as well as a way to find the gold stars and eventually the diary (although to many it was too basic to be wiping as well). It did remind us that she was merely human with all of the frailties of an imperfect human being. In other words she peed and pooped like all of us and was certainly not some ethereal goddess atop a pedestal which Babs had placed her.

I thought it was meant to show how even living in almost intimate contact with Barbara she still was not aware of Barbara's sexual feelings for her - that she was comfortable enough to leave the door open because she was oblivious to what was really going on.

reply

I was disturbed by the fact that she didn't even know how to properly clean herself with the toilet paper touching her clothes.

reply

Oh big deal. Everybody pees and poops. Can't we just accept it and move on? Perhaps maybe that shot was not necessary, but it certainly was not worth fussing over.
