Opening Scene

Did anyone else love the opening scene as much as I did? It seemed almost "graceful". I loved how he was having a normal conversation with his wife about what to pick up for dinner then just as the phone snapped shut his car was peeled in half almost and it suddenly spun into that shot of him lying in a near by field. I know that seems odd to say that was such an awesome scene, but I thought it was just so beautifuly done. There were alot of scenes like that in this movie, I loved that about it.

That scene was frightening. I wonder if it really took place that way. I already can't remember, was Terry in any way responsible for the accident, or was it completely the other driver's fault? Whatever happened to the other driver? I don't think it was mentioned in the movie.

One thing for sure that didn't happen is Terry talking on his cell phone with his wife just before the accident as cell phones were not in wide use back in 1987 or 1988 when the accident occurred.

IT was stated in a review that elements of the movie were updated so the cell phone was added so everything in this movie is not exactly as it happened in its original time.

Apparently the other driver ran a red light in real life but it wasn't portrayed that way in the movie. He also didn't seem to be wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. Later in the movie when he decides to drive the car he says "Seatbelt" as he starts the car which was a little inconsistent with the opening scene.

It definitely shows him wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

My question is, what exactly caused the accident? It definitely doesn't show that and no other car is shown at the accident scene.

I know this post is old, but I recently recorded it on LMN and am watching now. Articles about Terry say that a van ran a red light. Also, his daughter (Tara, I believe) remembered being on the phone with him. So while it wasn't a cell phone, it was the old car phone.

As for the crash scenw itself, it scared me. Just goes to show that things can be fine one minute and horrible the next.

I've only seen shorts of the movie on Youtube (don't think it's been shown over here) and it was quite obvious that he was struck by another fast moving vehicle. It's a quick scene so perhaps you, literally, blinked at the wrong time or glanced away because you heard something in the house or outside.
