Why the set up?

Never have really been able to grasp the story as to why it appears 47 was set up? What's the motive for killing their best agent?

I mean, he completes his job, is set out to take out a witness only to to realize it was a set up, with another assassin trying to take him out. Obviously I know that 47 realized Belicoff used a body double, but doesn't explain why The Organization turned on him.

I've seen the movie a bunch of times but still just don't understand it.

blame that on the studio hiring the editor to make it "more commercial" but from the remains all I could gather was the director wanted to lay heavily on the Clone aspect of the original hitman.

Basically Agent 47 is a clone, all the other bald agents are clones too, the original train station sequence had 47 kill one of his clones, but the studio deemed the sequence not COOL AND ACTIONY enough, so they pretty much cut the sequence, and reshot the scene with him fighting the 3 assassins, and since one of them is black, it lays inconsistent with the whole clone thing in the original story.

So since that Russian president is manufacturing his own clones, I think he wanted to get rid of agent 47 because 47 is deemed The greatest clone, it's still unclear from how the film was edited and possibly, written.

But in the original game, agent 47's dna makeup is consisted of 5 men, the doctor who created him, a triad crime lord, a columbian drug lord, an austrian crime lord, and a Kazakhstan gun runnner. The Doctor's research is funded by these 4 crime lords so he can create and manufacture organs for them so they can live for much longer, all of them are 60 to 70 years old, but appear younger for their age because of his augmentations, but in secret, the doctor uses their funding and research to create an army of perfect soldiers, his finest of these creations being 47.

When the crime lords become suspicious of The Doctor's intentions, he unleashes 47 on them, but after killing all of them, Agent 47 realizes what he is, and he realizes who created him, so he goes after The Doctor, fighting through the "48s" a group of clones the doctor uses to try and kill 47.

anyways, I'm assuming in the movie, since 47 is considered the perfect clone, perfect soldier, perfect whatever, the Russian president felt threatened by this, so he decided to have 47 killed via the sniper on the roof scene.

The whole movie is a mess imo, still watchable, just a mess though in contrast to the original game's storyline

In the film's the hitmen were not clones. They were runaways and orphans. People who wouldn't go missed.

Why they tried to kill him was the assassination with sniping the Russian president at the near start of the film. 47 knew that was the real target and was the real president. Meaning the other one who appear surviving the shot was a fake.

The agency was in league with the fake one to help putting him into power. And the only person who knew he was a fake was 47. To close the loop they had to kill 47. The other hitmen didn't know. They were just hired to kill 47. And like most assassins it would be mostly no question s asked.
