exquisite film

Without being sentimental or trite, the film is a paean to family bonds and filial loyalty. The performances are extraordinary; to see Kristoferson's face glow as he looks at a fish or a flower is magical. The concluding scenes do require a willing suspension of disbelief but the viewer is rewarded by an unforgettable experience. So many films today are so worthless that to see a gem like DISAPPEARANCES makes you appreciate fine acting and excellent writing.

I guess I'm just not "deep" enough because I watched the whole movie and found it simply pointless.

I thought it was a lovely movie. It had beautiful scenery, cinematography, great actors who delivered their lines well, but with all that, I think I still didn't get what I was supposed to out of the movie. Maybe as the OP said, you have to suspend your disbelief to a certain level in order to understand the movie, and maybe I was unable to do that. I also read the director's comments about what he was trying to project with the movie. They helped a tiny bit, but not much. I think there we just too many pointless appearances/disappearances of things and people to really make any sense.
I'm not afraid of heights, snakes or redheaded women (Raylan).
