The timing in this movie makes no sense...

If Maps and Lucy were listening to "Who'll Stop the Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, obviously that part took place in the 1970s. There's no way that Maps could've died and the December Boys could've been THAT old at the end of the movie...

It took place in an era that no longer exists and its messages are true for all times and for all people who grow to old age and remain friends and retain affection through the years as did the Skipper and her husband. This would explain the excessively elderly appearence of the boys 30-40 years later".

This movie reminded me of my childhood, and why should i then care what time it's supposed to take place?

This is a great movie if you had a similar childhood even if it's just a little bit.

Or maybe the ending of the movie is taking place in the future :)

I just saw this movie while flying and because of a mishap with their equipment missed the ending. But that being said,I agree the timing is way off. Somebody did not think it through when they were filming the movie.

I don't find a timing problem at all. The men in the final scene are in the early 50s and their hair is going gray. (I started going gray in my 20s.) They are clearly still physically able to climb the bluffs and run along the beach. I was most saddened by the destruction of the beach cottages. It was such a nice place.

You must not get out much. I'm in my early 50's and could pass for one of their sons.... or even grandsons. They all looked like they were pushing 70 at the end of the movie and all 4 of us watching said the same thing... how could they be listening to CCR 60 years ago?? Cute movie but that was a major screwup.

Some thoughts:
-I've seen PLENTY of movies wherein the initial scenes are set in the past or even the present and they end a little in the future. and I've seen movies where it is set in the past but they use modern music.
-The scenery and clothing, etc. look like mid 60s to me, however that is just my opinion. If the younger boys were 9-12 years old in the mid 1960's, they'd be between 50 and 60 now. That works with how the men playing the parts of the older December Boys looked. They didn't look too old to me, but perhaps that is because I myself will be celebrating my 40th birthday next year and what used to seem REALLY old to me previously just doesn't seem so anymore.

Just some food for thought,
Peace, Y'all!

SO right! Can't believe there were about 15 postings before someone pointed this out. "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Spirit in the Sky" were definitely around 1970...the kids would have been born around 1955-1960. Those dudes at the end of the film looked close to 70 yrs. old. (I'm 61 and no way I look that old--nor do my friends and former classmates from years ago). This is a really bad gaff. I was really enjoying the film until the final scene with the old guys. No, I'm not really picky, but films have to make sense--especially within the parameters that they establish from the beginning. And DON'T tell me this was supposed to have taken place in a non-specific time and a 'magical' 'mystical' place. This wrecked ending could have EASILY been fixed with actors in their early 50's coming back to spread Maps' ashes. If you weren't going to do that, then use songs in the soundtrack from sometime close to 1960 or earlier. Like I said, I was really liking this pic until the end sequence.

Their excessive age bothered me also (did someone here really think that's what early 50s looks like?! Or ANY 50s, for that matter--even with the Aussie sun speeding wrinkles along, that's not what 50s look like). But the movie is so good, that I decided the ending takes place further in the future than we are now, enough further that their evident ages make sense. I'll simply ignore whatever the year of the car is that we see. Good movies inspire me to put up with stuff like that.

Wow, I guess when one turns 60 one looses the capacity for realistic analysis.... Could it be that the ending was set in the future? Is that so far-fetched?
