THE ONE FLAW IN SLEEPER CELL

Sleeper Cell was an amazing show and I was indefinitely hooked.

However, their was one flaw that I think was unforeseen by many, even the directors and producers who did a brilliant job at portraying accuracy in Islam.

THE NAMES!!!!!!

Tommy or Christian had no ISLAMIC NAME. If they did, it was NEVER mentioned.
This seems ridiculous to me, as for a Muslim, a name is their identity it is their pride in Islam.
Anyone recall Mohammed Ali, (a.k.a - Cassius Clay) ??? You only had to refer to him as "Cassius" after his reverting to Islam and he would go ape! He associated his name with Islam and his faith which is true by all means.

One of the FIRST things you do when you revert to Islam, after reciting the shahadda (the conversion to Islam), You are also obliged to change your name to an Islamic one.

Funny how everybody refers to Christian (how unislamic is that!) and Tommy to their birth names.

To me, this did not make sense, its not an encouragement to Isam. Even DARWYN is NOT a Muslim name although its common for African American converts to keep their slave name.

Brilliant show and every recitation of the koran was accurate but the issue with the name thing really got to me. Ive never met a Musim called Christian! Contrary, to say the least!

Muslim converts do NOT have to change their name upon conversion unless their name has unIslamic origins. So Christian would clearly have to change his name but Tommy? No.

Also, Africans keeping their slave name? What are you talking about? Those Africans that do have slave names that would be referring to their last names not their first name. Hence why Malcolm Little became Malcolm X to remove his slave name.

I don't know what the standard is for un-Islamic origins, but Tommy comes from Thomas, which is a "biblical" name.

Also, don't Muslims consider Jesus a prophet? He's supposedly part of their religion too...

No, the real flaw is Darwyn being undercover and asking thousands of questions.Someone will notice if you're undercover in some drug cartel,terror organization,etc and keep asking questions.

The real flaw is that Darwyn is a devout muslim yet he has sex with someone who isnt his wife. After 9/11 a lot of muslim converts havent changed their name in order to make people realize that they are similar to them even if their beliefs are different. Also, someone in a sleeper cell who wouldnt want to have attention drawn to them wouldnt want an Islamic name so that they could go on with their double life without suspicion

Thats nothing. The 9/11 hijackers went to strip clubs and did other things to blend in within the population. They justify doing non-Muslim things by saying that you can do it to deceive your enemy and if you're on a holy mission.

Adultery leads to capital punishment in Islam, not sex. Premarital sex is haraam, yes, but there is no death penalty for it unless it is rape.

You could tell he was extremely upset after he found out that she was still married. She revealed to him that her husband was in jail after killing someone in a DUI and refused to sign papers. Darwyn still continued the relationship after some hard thinking.

That shows you that Darwyn used his own judgement. Since her husband refused to sign papers he believed his relationship with that chick was OKAY. She couldn't divorce him.

I don't think that's a flaw. How many devout Catholics have had premarital sex? Especially amongst the younger generations. Muslims are probably no different.

You are wrong on a number of levels. You are NOT obligated to do that, although alot do it and it can be argued there is pressure to do it. And Christian is of course not an unislamic name: Jesus is considered a prophet in Islam, how could his name be unislamic? And while Tommy is clearly not islamic, as others said: if you are a sleeper it makes sense NOT to waive the fact that you are a muslim into everyone face. Why would they recrute white converts in the first place if they didnt want to use their ability to just blend in. And while Mohammed Ali and the Nation of Islam indeed liked to call american name "slave names", its kinda insenstive and dismissive to just call it that way. That way you want to tell AA converts: you are an uncle tom, and delegitimate their own decisions. Not cool.
