Filming - "Venice?"

Where in England was Elizabeth I supposed to be living in a 'Venice' type city - with houses sitting right alongside the water? I'm not familiar with any such place in England at present.

Where were those parts in the film shot?

I haven't seen this in ages and am re-watching it tonight and specifically came here to see where it was filmed.

Lithuania! Could have knocked me over with a feather.

Yes - I saw that on the imdb page - but all 3 places mentioned say 'Vilnius.'

I've been in Vilnius twice for a number of days and walked the city kms and kms. There is only a river - and no situation with buildings almost sitting in the water - as per Venice - and the way it looked in the film. In fact there are old buildings only in the center and don't look like those buildings in the film anyway.

Vilnius is far, far from the Baltic coast and was actually part of Poland at various times.

There have to be filming locations which are not mentioned - someone want to write to BBC? :-)

I thought it was Venice. Surprised to find it was Lithuania. In this country I think that part of the backs at Cambridge is a little bit like that.

(one rather sure thing - those water scenes were NOT in Lithuania - and ABSOLUTELY not in Vilnius)

Sorry for that. I was in a bit of a hurry when I posted yesterday.

I was referring to England. Cambridge is a beautiful town with the River Cam meandering around parts of the town. The river goes right up to and washes some of the medieval walls in parts. This part of the river and medieval buildings are known as 'The Backs.' Punt boats go along the river. Not unlike the gondoliers of Venice. It's a beautiful place.

been in Cambridge but missed the riverbanks and that scene

in any case, the filming wasn't there - and regardless of where it was, I do wonder what kind of replication they were attempting as royal festivities and activities took place around London and there are no 'Venice-like-scapes' there.
