Im referring to the graphic violence and overall serious style, not necessarily the samurai theme. I find most anime series unwatchable due to the childish cartoon moments (so called "comedy" i guess) and character development through corny "inspiring" messages.
shareI'm not a big anime fan myself, for mostly the same reasons you described. I did discover Witchblade (inspired by the American comicbook.) It's not all out action and it does have an overly cute little girl/daughter character but it's certainly mature toned and quite beautiful to look at. It's produced by Gonzo, too.
Also, Devil Lady is very mature themed too. A lot of monster action and no cuteness at all. It has pretty good lead characters but it's... older. I've found older anime to be an acquired taste.
