AFRO OVERRATED

I jus got tha dvd il get alot of backlash 4 sayin this...but this series is wayyyyyy overrated.
The only character that stands out is the protagonist & visual style.
I think i hav watched and enjoyed so much of samurai x,7 samurai & fullmetal alchemist to be drawn into this *beep*

This is more like a grindhouse anime kinda like Ninja Scroll, it's not really supposed to compete with the animes you listed.

reply

I kind of like this anime than samurai x.

reply

It's not that AS is overrated. It's a great anime . Simply a lot of other animes that arent worse than Afro dont get so much attention.

reply

I agree. Afro Samurai has a terrific visual style, but no substance at all. Unlike American animation, japanese anime usually has good ideas, powerful stories and very complex characters, you can't find any of this in the Afro Samurai series

reply

who in the world would try finding complex story elements in a simple hack and slash anime thats made for FUN and STYLISH hacking and slashing? o_O

reply

Many people would and want that. The fact it is an anime, does not mean the story line has to be at kids level. As you mentioned, very simple hack and slash, nothing else but a few nice visuals and boring soundtrack.

reply

Afro Samurai is Japanese, idiot. It just has English dialog and actors.

reply

I tried watching Afro Samurai, I don't like it. Great action, but the story is lame, the characters are shallow and annoying, and the music is forgettable. (despite being made by the RZA)

Samurai Champloo is better in every way.

reply

Man, the soundtrack is the last thing you should look for in a good movie. I suspect you're just to trying rip on RZA.

reply

Even if it were the last thing you should look for, it might be the last important thing you should look for because yes, it makes a difference. Samurai Champloo had a good sountrack, visuals, better story and still nice fights.

reply

No, to me, the story's *beep* awesome, the entire concept is amazing and the visual style and music are superb.

reply

the soundtrack *beep* rules.

Afro Samurai is probably the worst anime I've ever seen. Beautiful animation but that's it. The music was terrible. RZA is foremost a rapper, not a composer. He made some weak MIDI beats for the fight scenes which did anything but up the intensity. The hype over Samuel L Jackson voicing Afro was a joke, too. I doubt afro said over 100 words throughout the entire damned thing. The fights were all extremely one-sided and too short-lived, too. It was thoroughly boring.

reply

samuel l. jackson voices the sidekick with the white hair. is that character's name afro? because while watching, i thought the protagonist's name was afro.

samuel l. clearly voices the sidekick guy who occasionally follows the protagonist around

reply

Sam voices both actually, which is awesome to think about when you figure out who Ninja Ninja (white haired guy) really is to Afro...

I for one completely enjoyed Afro Samurai...the style was beautiful, the music didn't hinder the action at all, in fact I found in some places it added to it.
The story, though simplistic, could be taken in many ways if they chose to do sequels and more seasons, but as it stands is a bare-bones revenge story...and I prefer that to story arcs and too many twists. This is an anime, not a freakin soap opera.

reply

Just watched it on Blu ray.
I felt that afro samurai tried very hard to be something like Samurai Champloo and maybe Ninja Scroll. But I think they failed.
The fights where pretty tame aswell as the story, music was rubbish and, and pretty much everything else felt mediocre. 6/10 from me.

reply

I tried watching some episodes of Afro Samurai and I must say I just can't watch it. The characters and the animation is extremely cliche and looks just like other animes. Same jerky movements, identical bad guys, jaded protagonists. Its just been done before so many times.
